about what it feels like to be in First Grade. I have been working with DD on handwriting and as many of you know, it is really tedious at times. We are also doing SOTW and we learned about Hieroglyphics this week. DD wanted me to write her name in Hieroglyphs so she could trace it. I thought GREAT IDEA! Well, it was freaking hard. Especially to make one hieroglyphic "L" look exactly like the other one. (that one happens to be a lion.)

anyway, I thought that must be how she feels when she can't get the letters exactly right. I must remember this.

When your child isn't getting place value, try to do math problems in base 7 or 8. That's what it's like for young children trying to grasp our base 10 number system. It's not easy!

I used to wonder why math programs stress place value every year. I read about the above trick, and now I understand!

Great point - especially with my son. Dd wrote early and well but ds struggles more. This might help me remember to have more patience.

You make a very good point, Ohio12, which is all too easily forgotten.

My own example ... I used to do adult literacy tutoring. At the training session, we were given a page of Russian to read. Then we were told that this is what a page of text looks like to someone who is illiterate. (The fact that I had had Russian in college meant that I had an advantage; however, the point was well taken!)

Another one for reading--learning to read Japanese. Whenever my son labored to sound out words in English it always reminded me of how I felt when I was studying Japanese. (I didn't get very far, BTW)
