I bought him a Booda bone today, thinking he might enjoy chewing on the thing. Alas, he feels the need to carry it around all day. He isn't exactly guarding it--I can take it from him--but he has paced around the house, holding the bone in his mouth, a good part of the day. Mostly he hasn't even chewed on it, but it's beginning to deteriorate so now he's eating it.

I've never seen anything like it. I don't know whether to give him the others (there were 3 in a pack) or not; of course, I don't know if he's ever had chewy bones before and so he doesn't really know what to do, or if this is his own doggie aberration, or what. He hasn't even eaten his food from this morning.

How strange is that???

We had a golden who did the same thing to a booda bone, including eating the strings. We also tried giving him nyla bones, but we got worried when he started chewing those up into big chunks and swallowing them. We had to quit giving him rawhide bones for the same reason...he'd swallow large pieces of them and it was gross because they didn't digest and would come back up a few days later! The only chew toy that he never managed to destroy and eat was a "Kong"!

We were at the vet one day when another golden was brought in after swallowing a tennis ball! I'll bet Soph the Vet has some interesting stories she could tell!

I haven't seen you post about him before, but I'm assuming he is a rescue? We adopted a rescue Porgie (half Pom, half Corgie) nearly two years ago, and he is the sweetest thing in the world, but we have come to realize he was abused (cringes if you have a newspaper or magazine) and neglected tremendously (he would not poop for four days when we first got him, and would only pee every two or three, and nowhere near our house--now he will pee once or twice a day in our yard, and poop every other day, still nowhere near our house--big progress, our vet says). He had no idea what a toy or treat was at first, and it took a very, very, very long time for him to get it. We have another younger dog (about 8 months old when we got him) who helped him at least see what things were, and now, when he is really excited or happy, he will get a toy and shake it around and play with it some, and he will eat treats he really loves. We got him into treats with meat (chicken) and with KONG!!!! The spray kong, which I do believe every dog adores!!! You can put it on everything! The boodas are great because they are made of baking soda or something like that that disintegrates well, if he doesn't chew well beware of rawhide or greenies, it can kill them (especially rawhide, if he swallows a chunk, it expands in his stomach and can get caught--very dangerous).

He'll eat his food, he is just too fascinated with his new toy. I usually save long chew toys for after dinner. The dogs come sit with us and each get one and chew away while we do other things. These are great for his teeth, and he will really enjoy them, and I have found our Porgie (Frodo) gets really attached to the last little pieces--he will carry them around with him and hide them in his bed--lol : )

Yes, Wrolf was a rescue. He was used for breeding for his first 5 years, and when his owner was finished with him, she put him out on a chain in the back yard for 4 years. In Texas. Where it's hotter than anything. He was rescued back in January, and we adopted him in May.

I'm thinking that he, like your dog, doesn't have any idea what to do with the chewie toy. He's an only dog so he doesn't have a role model; I guess I'll wait a week and give him the next one. I think the treat will be fine as it is a Booda Bone and not a rawhide or anything similar.

Why do people even own animals if they are going to mistreat them???:glare:
