..my ds8 can diagram most sentences correctly with all eight parts of speech present, can identify all parts of speech, phrases, and define them. He can (but does not always) use all parts of speech to diversify his writing.
He has also memorized all the common prepositions, personal pronouns, indefinite pronouns & helping verbs.
He knows how to use a dictionary, can alphabetize to the 4th letter, knows the rules for all the parts of speech, knows the capitalization and punctuation rules (uses most of the time in independent writing).
Some things he doesn't know are the extras. Things like similes, homonyms, allegory, etc.
In the fall he will finish up Step-by-Step Grammar 2. Since he typically does five or more pages during each grammar lesson (I allot 20 min. a day in our schedule) he will be finished with Basic Grammar in November or December if he hits a snag. We'd like to move on into higher grammar, but I'm not sure which program would be a good fit for ds. Also I'd like to get something that will help him learn to analyze literature and something that will catch those missed areas.
What would you suggest for my ds 8? He independently writes on a 5th to 6th grade level, spells on a 7th grade level and comprehends text on a 9th grade level. Of course he still has days when he would rather (and obstinately does) work on a 3nd grade level, but they are rare.
