What level should my 5th graders start at if they haven't had very much grammar? We did R&S2, R&S3-partly, and through GWG4 chap 1 the last two years. We have covered nouns and action verbs to death. Is there enough review in the 5th grade book or should we back up?

You might consider emailing the author for her opinion if you don't get many responses. That is what I did and she was very helpful. I have a 5th grader right now and he's using GWG4. This is our first year homeschooling and he came out of ps without knowing much grammar.

If you are using GWG - what do you use for a writing program?

I think GWG is very gentle and easy to understand. My dd9 is using GWG 5 and her favorite part is the diagramming. I'll second the suggestion to email the author as she is super nice and helpful.

FWIW, my daughter finished Writing Tales 2 and I moved her into Wordsmith Apprentice. While she enjoyed WT, I decided that wasn't the writing path I wanted to follow. I prefer a more traditional way of writing. The Wordsmith Apprentice is a bit odd to me, but my dd9 is loving it.

Wordsmith Apprentice for writing. There are a bunch of writing programs out there to choose from. I liked the Wordsmith Apprentice b/c it looked more "fun" while teaching solid concepts. Didn't prefer Writing Strands (not my style of writing) but some do. My dd11 also uses Anc. Hist. Based WRiting Lessons from IEW and likes it. You can easily use that for a 5th grader as well. IEW has theme books for AMerican, Medievil as well.

We use Writing Skills by EPS. It does include grammar for writing.
