The people who sell Lightning Literature have something for 5th graders. I haven't seen LL in real life to know how they compare, but I think they are quite different. I have the one book and it reminds me of the Prodigy Press guides or similar, but more economical since there are several stories, etc. in the one book. Here's more info:

Best Selling Nonfiction
Best Selling Plays
Best Selling Poems
Best Selling Short Stories
Best Selling Chapters

Published by Jamestown Publishers and they appear to be secular. I recently purchased Best Selling Chapters which I believe was listed as 5th-7th grade. There is a series for middle school and high school also.

This book has 8 chapters with lessons for teaching the basic elements of literature. Each chapter has an excerpt from a book (Gilly Hopkins, Hatchet, Witch of Blackbird Pond, Shane, Juan de Pareja, Ghosts I have Seen, Message to Hadrian, Wrinkle in Time)

And each chapter focuses on one thing: character, setting, conflict, narrator, theme, use of language, historical fiction, and fantasy. There are a few questions, discussion ideas and writing exercises for each chapter.

The only curr. that comes to mind that might be close is Learning Language Arts Through Literature (http://www.commonsensepress.com/covers.htm).

I'm using LL7 for dd11 next year for 7th. This year we've been using DITHOR for ds8, ds9 and dd11. They have a 2/3 level, 4/5 level and a 6-8 level. You choose what books you read, each from 9 different genres. There are lessons in each genre section w/ act. on character analysis (not real in depth), setting, plot, favorite parts, etc. Not as in depth as LL7 seems to be, but I like that you can pick your own books and that it focuses on whole books rather than little passages taken out of context to teach a particular point.
