for those of us who have been following her writing tape for years (about 6), do you think it will add that much?

I'm trying to decide on a writing program for my dd next year for 3rd grade. So far I'm considering WT1 & CW-A. I can't wait to see sample pages from SWB's book. It might be just what I'm looking for! :D

Hey Jodi,
I'm hoping to get a look at them first-hand at the FPEA conference in May. I love SWB's Writing Without Fear. She explains well her advice for the early and middle years. I only wish she went into as much detail for the later years! This is definitely *on the list* for the FPEA conference. Can't wait to look at the rhetoric level book some day . . . . :)
Blessings,

If it's as resourceful as her Writing Without Fear CD was for me, then I'm raising my hand. I will be attempting Writing Tales I with my 3rd grader, but as a certifiable curriculum junkie this sounds like something I would buy to check out.

This is definitely on "high priority" consideration for my dd who will be in third grade. We're happy with FLL and I am thinking of using this with FLL3 next year.

Same here. DD is finishing up FLL, and I've already got FLL3 waiting in the wings for her. I think we will add Susan's writing program into this mix this fall.

I definitely plan on trying it with my fourth grader and second grader. We love FLL and I think it will probably be right up our alley.

Yep, this is the first of three. I think the workbooks coincide with grades 1 and 2? Does anyone know? When my little guys are ready for it, I'm buying!

will probably buy it at the WHO convention here in WA. Everything else she has written works great for us. I am sure this will also.

Does it come after FLL-3? This would make it starting at about 4th grade.
Along side FLL-3? I'm confused because FLL contained both grammar and writing (via copywork/dictation and narrations). I thought FLL-3 did the same but just took it up a notch. If that's true then would you really want to do FLL-3 in full alongside this new program?

I'd buy it if it was the level my kids needed, but I'll have to wait until the next one I guess. bummer!

I need the logic stage book so I will have to wait.
I think the first volume is designed to go alongside FLL 3 although FLL3 does have dictation and narration. I would like to look at it. Maybe you could just get the text and do it with FLL 3 and 4 . You might not have to have the workbooks.

So I asked SWB a few weeks ago about that in a post and here is her reply:
"Yes, the books expand on the writing CD, giving much more detailed year-by-year breakdowns of what skills to teach when and how."
I'll definitely be having a close look at Volume 1 when it comes out, and the others as they get written and published. I found the CD so helpful, and if the books expand on it....well, I need all the detailed help I can get! :)

I am pretty sure we are going to buy it. I am very interested. I want to look at the sample pages first. Just to see what it is really like. I know that writing is one area we are slacking in and would love to fix.

I only wish she went into as much detail for the later years!
My oldest is only 9, but I am trying to work my way through the writing recommendations on the writing CD, and trying to piece all the learning stages together in my mind. I wondered why there wasn't much on the CD about rhetoric stage, then I found these (labeled Tackling the Research Paper):

I, too, very much look forward to the publication of all the books! I've taken extensive notes from the CD and read WTM, but I think having books specifically giving more details than in those other two resources will tremendously help me - I do better with print than with trying to take notes - but the notetaking from the CD has been FAR better than nothing for me. I just SOOOO appreciate her work. I would NOT have known how to teach any of this, had I not discovered these things.

Writing is my biggest weak spot (at least today! :)). I also have found it hard to decide on a resource to use and I have yet to go wrong with anything written by SWB. I love SOTW and I find FLL VERY effective with my kids. I can't believe how well they retain their grammar. I will have a look at the samples when they come out and decide then, but I have high hopes. I will be using it with FLL3 for my 3rd grader (as recommended by SWR it is a perfect combo with FLL, just skip the optional dictations in FLL3 so as not to overdo the handwriting.)
All the best,

Might be a silly question, but does anyone know if this follows the progymnasmata?
Kathie in VA

She posted about this recently. She said that it will follow the progym but only in the later years. She said that in the early years she really wanted to work on the basics.

In answer to how they work together...we'll be putting this up on the website.
You can now read samples at peacehillpress.com, too!
HOW FLL AND WWE WORK TOGETHER
First Language Lessons and Writing With Ease are designed to be used together. First Language Lessons covers grammar, punctuation, and mechanics; Writing With Ease covers actual writing skills. The two books are structured so that the exercises in Writing With Ease help to reinforce the concepts learned in First Language Lessons.
First Language Lessons does include dictation and narration exercises with some lessons. If you are using Writing With Ease, you may choose to skip these exercises in First Language Lessons (especially for a child whose fine motor skills are still developing). However, if your student needs additional practice in dictation or narration, the exercises in First Language Lessons can act as a supplement to Writing With Ease.

I just looked at the samples. I really liked what I saw. I am definitely going to get the main book. I don't know whether I am going to get the workbook, though. They say that they have Year 1 and 2 available. I am assuming that is for Gr.1 and 2. My oldest will be going into gr.4, so the workbooks won't help me, at least not with her. I hope I can pull this off without the workbooks.

Yep! I'm going to get WWE and the 1st grade workbook for ds (and maybe dd) when they come out. I'm so excited that this came out just in time for us. Even though ds will be in 2nd grade, his hwing is a year behind,so we haven't worked on written composition this year.

Just pre-ordered!
After reading the sample chapters,I'll order it.I've not been happy with the parts of dd's textbook that taught writing for grades 2-5 (the grammar was great though!).This looks like it teaches writing the way I think it should be taught.

Susan was absolutely right about the need for a good writing program for the early years. I would have loved to have had this for my older two a couple of years ago. We floundered around a long time.
I'll probably purchase this when my 3rd child hit's first grade in a year or two. I love FLL.

Susan, those samples are really excellent. Thanks especially for releasing Chapter 4. I'm just quietly sniffling in the corner since my children are entering logic stage now (DD 11) and soon (DS 9)--levels for them probably won't be able to be finished in time. We are really liking CW, but your program looks like it's going to be fabulous also (as usual!). Thanks for producing consistently thoughtful, high-quality materials that help us "flesh out" WTM.
I've got one already in the logic stage and the other is beyond this book even though she's still in the grammar stage. Both are doing fine with IEW, so I'm not going "fix what isn't broken." We'll watch the progression though!
I am really debating about ordering it. I have a dd6 is in 1st grade, doing mostly 2nd grade stuff. She loves to write fairy tales or fables. The word plagarism comes to mind when I read them :D but I know that's the way it is suppose to be right now. As far as dictation goes, the child is an air head of the inth degree. She reminds me of the absent minded professor...losing his glasses that are perched on his head. <sigh>
I liked the samples that I saw. Is the lesson from the workbook? If not, I'd like to see a lesson from each level workbook. As much as I don't like it, dd LOVES workbooks. IT is nice though, with a 3 yr old running amok.

I am planning to use the level 1 writing in combo with FLL1 for my (will be) first grade dd next year. I am also planning on a FLL3/ level 2 combo for my (will be) 3rd grade son since he has had *no* "formal" writing instruction to date and he is very "pencil" phobic

Does the "Year Two" sample go with Workbook 2?
Nevermind....I see that Susan answered this question in another post. :)

I would love to put my hands on this at a convention. Sounds like it could work well for my up and coming second grader.
