I have a long list of math programs I'm considering but I have a few questions about these two. I don't like Saxon and I've heard these 2 are kind of similar. So here are my reasons I don't like Saxon and I thought maybe someone could tell me if they hold true for Horizons and CLE.

1.) I don't like how Saxon teaches 1 concept in one lesson and then a totally different concept in the next.

2.) I don't like how Saxon only has about 3-5 problems that pertain to the lesson and 25 problems that are all review.

3.) I don't like how Saxon will sometimes introduce several different unrelated concepts in one lesson.

Anyway I thought that if Horizons and CLE are exactly like that then I could eliminate them. I was looking at them to go along with Singapore.

Thanks!

Horizons is excellent.
I used it for my first two.
It only goes up to the 8th grade, but if you complete Horizons 8th grade math, you can easily switch to saxon 87 or possible Algebra 1/2.

I just finished Horizons K with my 5 year old.. He's just not doing as well in it because he's a bit too distracted by it. I'm doing Saxon with him because it is so black and white.
Horizons will always be my favorite.. and to me the most sound program, I'm speaking from 14 years experience.

Horizons does jump all over the place like Saxon. If you're looking for a mastery approach, try Singapore or BJU. Don't know about CLE.

Actually, I'd disagree with that... It's not totally focused on one topic at a time as Singapore is, but it doesn't "jump all over the place like Saxon" either. There's instruction on one topic for several lessons in a row, then the topic changes to something else for a while. There is review of all previous topics in every lesson. But there's definitely more work on the current topic (both within a single lesson and over subsequent lessons) than there is in Saxon.

My suggestion is to order one of the Light Units ( not the first one because its just a review book ) and see if it works out well . You won't know if it works unless you try .
CLE is repetitious so if your child doesn't need that then you may want to try programs like BJU math , Singapore , Math U See , or Rod and Staff that are mastery based .
