Ancients in 11th grade, need opinions.

TOG, Omnibus, Sonlight, or TWTM...thinking way ahead.

Next year she will be using Notgrass for US History and LLC American Literature.

I want to do a thorough course on Ancients and possible Medieval as far as we can.

Which of the above curriculums will approach my intent more completely? Can you say?

Do you want to do this in 11th grade, or over 11th and 12th?

Ancients through the fall of the Roman Empire, about 400 A.D. Omnibus II has some slight overlap, beginning with Eusebius's The Church History and then moving into The Confessions of St. Augustine.

I would cover the Ancients in one year, and then do the next year with the Middle Ages through the Renaissance. I think it's possible to cover part of the Middle Ages in that first year, but perhaps only the beginning of the Middle Ages.

If you want to do it over two years, I'd use Omnibus 1 without most of the secondary works, then do Omni 2, but lighten the load a little and maybe add in a few more Renaissance works. I'd also read whole chapters in Spielvogel instead of the snippets they recommend, even if it doesn't correspond exactly to the time period of the Great Book you are reading.

If you just want to do the 11th grade year in Ancients but try to add in a "little extra," you could shorten the list from Omni 1, read a few selections (maybe those up to the Magna Carta or so) from Omni 2, and, again, concentrate on the Spielvogel. I also like Barron's World History the Easy Way--it has some extra questions and lists in each chapter of dates and people to be sure to cover.

It seems you are planning for 2009-10. If this is correct, I'd take a look at the tentative reading list for Omnibus IV which is available at the Veritas Press website http://resources.veritaspress.com/downloads/Omnibus%20IV%20Reading%20List.htm The text is due to be released in 2009.

I'd not recommend using Omnibus I for 11th grade, imho that text is more appropriate for 7th-9th.

I really liked using WTM/WEM for our Ancient Great Books/History study.
There are several Teaching Co. courses that dovetail really nicely with this.
(Elizabeth Andiver's lectures on the Iliad, Odyssey, and Aenid are excellent)
