View Full Version : Has anyone had trouble with their babies nursing after the new rotavirus vaccine?

My two-month old got his first vaccines yesterday - only the Dtap and the oral rotavirus - we're following a slightly delayed and spread-out vaccine schedule.

After the appointment and continuing until now he's gone from nursing every two and a half hours to stretching to three hours or more during the day. He'll nurse just a little then start fussing and crying: I really have to be persistent to get him to nurse anywhere near as much as he was before yesterday.

Could this be because of the rotavirus vaccine? My pediatrician's office doesn't think it's possible (of course, they also don't believe that teething can cause diarrhea, fever or fussiness - we won't even go there!) but I was curious if anyone else has had this experience.

He's my first child that has had this particular vaccine because of it's relative newness.

Thanks
Janet

My youngest child had this vaccination, and I think he did have stomach cramps after it. However, since his oldest sister spent 3 nights in the ICU with rotavirus at 16 months, the discomfort from the vaccine would not make me not get it for my child.

Do you remember how long the reaction lasted? I'm hoping that he's back to normal tomorrow.

I am sorry. I don't remember. I think it was just one day.

I just did a google search of the rotarix side effects and the first site that came up listed crying and abdominal pain, along with irritability and loss of appetite.
On the other hand, it could be the DTaP too. The CDC's website (http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/vac-gen/side-effects.htm#rota) lists fussiness, tiredness and poor appetite as side effects.
I do believe that these type of effects wear off after a day of two, but if it doesn't I would discuss it with your pediatrician again. If they continue to discount your mother's intuition, I would find a new pediatrician.
I hope your little one is back to normal soon. I know how scary it is when they are not feeling well when they are so small.

Thanks Robyn and Caroline -
After I posted I tried nursing him again and he nursed like a champ so maybe it's passed. It was really scary and frustrating last night and today but I'm feeling better about it now.
