Is this typically done in 1 year or 2? Is the first 1/2 of the book review of the last half of Henle first year? Can I teach it ( I am learning Latin right along side my dd) or do I have to farm it out? What is covered in Henle second year? What level of the NLE exam would I be expecting to prepare for? Thank you and if there is anything else I should know, please feel free to share. Thank you, Angela:001_smile:

HTH,

First Year Latin (Henle I) is typicaly used in grades 9 & 10;
Second Year Latin (Henle II) is typically used in grades 11 & 12 in a traditional high school from what I understand.

Some people get through about unit 8 (if memory serves) in Henle 1 in a year; then the next year, they continue with Henle 2, instead of finishing Henle 1. The grammar section of Henle 2 is largely a review of Henle 1, but it moves fast! Then you move on to Caesar.

You can use it the same way you do Henle I. You'd want Henle I on hand to refer to for more complete grammar explanations, if you get lost. You'd want to be on the Yahoo group, to ask questions and get help. But if you got through a substantial part of Henle 1 well, I think you could teach 2.

I have no idea how it corresponds to the NLE exam. I think the first 5 units of Henle 1 should get you through NLE Latin I, certainly.

I did Henle 2 along with my oldest two sons. I would farm out beyond Henle 2 but I think you can continue along with Henle 2 just as you did with book 1. We did complete almost all of Henle 1 and it certainly made Henle 2 more doable especially for my 8th grader. My boys did well on the NLE Latin 2 exam. I do not think they would be prepared for the Latin 3 exam with Henle 2. My oldest son completed this in 1 year. My younger son could have but a little over half way through I decided to slow him down (he wasn't always working well and even when he was could not finish it in a reasonable amount of time) so we will finish it this year and add in all of Lingua Latina.

For Henle 2, I used the Mother Of Divine Grace Syllabus (I think it is called Latin III syllabus). It had errors in some of the quizzes, but doing them myself before the kids took them, I was able to catch the mistakes (sometimes they were just typos). We just worked through Henle 1 from start to finish with no guide. I would do that again, but with Henle 2 there is more in the book than you can do and I appreciated having a schedule with assignments.

There is a NEW Latin III NLE syllabus. Go to http://www.nle.org and
download the latest newsletter, which has details. Essentially, many students do not complete the study of Latin grammar and syntax in 2 years and therefore end up not being quite ready for the literary questions on the Prose or Poetry examinations. There's nothing wrong with this. Teachers are trying to ensure that their students really do understand the grammar and syntax, rather than rushing them through and only covering the material superficially. So the new Latin III exam will cover material that is typical at the end of the second year textbook. It's supposed to be a bridge exam between the Latin II syllabus and the Latin III-IV Prose exam. The Latin III-IV exam remains intact.

After a disastrous co-op experience where the other students weren't serious about learning Latin, my son dropped the class at the recommendation of the teacher and did Henle Latin yr 1 and 2. He learned Latin on his own and did about a book a year. (The wasted time at the co-op Latin class messed up his schedule and they were using a different book anyway.)
I can tell you that he scored exceptionally well on the 2nd Year National Latin Exam.

Thank you for your responses. I now can plan a flexible time line and have the encouragement that with hard work, we can do it. Angela:001_smile:
