self study approach. My dh is really self motivated to learn the language. ( I tried to talk him into learning Spanish.) He really wants to learn French. I would take suggestions of other self learning French programs.
He did not like Rosetta Stone. He wants something that starts with grammar/alphabet and moves up.

We're using this program, after trying Rosetta Stone, the Learnables, and other programs. We really like it and the two children using it like how it moves step by step -- very friendly to those students who want to do it mostly themselves. That said, I don't think it is possible to learn any language without conversing in it, so we figure on having them also take some classes at the local community college, just so they hear and speak the language in some form other than a CD. Ideally, we would have someone who could immerse the children in the language, but we don't.
