I like the idea of the scripture memory system and I found through Rose (dragons in the flower bed), the idea of using a folder instead of index cards.

Now, the question is, what to memorize?

I have a list of the Presidents; Kings and Queens of England; States and their capitols.

What other things should we memorize, apart from bible verses. (Atheist family)

Any ideas. This is our first time really putting an effort into memorizing stuff, so I would like to start out easy-ish at first.

If you have WTM, it has recommended memory work lists for each year in the history sections. It's also popular around here to memorize poetry. IEW has a nice collection, but anything you like will work.

We are going to attempt to memorize the Preamble to the Constitution, as much as the Declaration of Independence as possible, several poems, presidents, states & capitals (almost done with this), Kings and Queens...then they will have science, history, and latin vocabulary, grammar terms, math facts and equations..I think that is it for the secular work. We are also memorizing Bible verses and the books of the Bible. I have all this copied and put in a three-prong folder for them.

Does anyone have a list of these and why? I think we want to memorize some math formulas and grammar terms, but would love to know what people have found the most useful and important. We are memorizing scieence terms with Lyrical Life Science and work on all math facts, but I feel like other formulas would be helpful.

Would you mind to tell me about these or tell me how to look them up? I would love to know about both. I really need to increase the amount of memory work we are doing, and both ideas spark my interest.

Amy, my website is down right now, going through a makeover, and switching to a new host. I can't email the file, either, because my e-mail is attached to my webhost. Maybe someone else who has downloaded it would be kind enough to send it to you? It's a PDF.

Basically, it's the same as the Scripture Memory System (http://simplycharlottemason.com/timesavers/memorysys/) at Simply Charlotte Mason, but formatted for a three-ring binder. (Yes, they gave me permission to use it.)

Memorization that we do:
Math facts - skip counting, conversions, measurement,
Grammar facts (First Language Lessons)
Latin vocab, declensions and conjugations, phrases,
geography- places, mountains, rivers, oceans, etc.
science definitions and facts
Bible - we did Awana's for years. We've memorized from sentences through chapters- (am definitly going to be checking out what Rose recommended)
Poetry Memorization (we love IEW's "Language Aquistition Through Poetry) and Logos has a great workbook on Poetry with tons more poems. Both programs recommend memory work as part of poetry study.
Logos also has some memory work for the grammar stage on CD.
History -dates, quotes, people
quotes
VP timeline cards
plays (my kids are usually in 1-2 a year so they end up memorizing most/all of the plays)
and of course dialogue from books and movie lines ad neuseum! :001_smile:

sorry for the multiple posts here- I'm getting tired! Just a thought on the Bible Memory work. "Educated people know the Bible." (can't remember where I saw that, but it always made me stop and think. It is one of the great classics and referenced by all. I would think that some of the "basics" would easily fit into a secularists memory schedue, such as the 10 Commandments, some of the Beatitudes, quotes from Jesus, etc.
