Any thoughts on this book? Mine is en route.

I loved it. It makes great points about the importance of community and knowing your neighbors and not succumbing to fear. Kids in nature is natural :p and you can find nature in cities easily if you know where to look.
I think its an outstanding book. Getting kids back to nature won't solve every problem but its an important act none the less :)

it looks good. I checked it out of the library but only managed to get a couple of chapters into it before it was overdue :glare:
Wonderful book - I really loved it and found it very inspiring.

Inspiring, indeed.
My favorite takeaway from this book (and not even a main point of the author's, just an aside from one of his interviewees) was to replace the phrase "Be careful" with "Pay attention" when playing/exploring outdoors. I love how that simple semantical shift replaces fear with empowerment. My kids need that. As do I.

Love it! Can not recommend it enough!
I completely agree with Linda too! I now say, "Pay attention" instead of "Be careful". That is so funny that we got the same thing out of it!

That's so funny... I completely forgot that's the book I got that from! I always say "pay attention" too!

I really enjoyed it. My kids are young enough to need pretty constant supervision when they are outside, so I sometimes push outdoor time aside to finish up all of the things I "need" to get done indoors. This book helped me reprioritize.

My book arrived yesterday and I have begun to read...I am glad that my dc have opportunity to play in real woods, swamps, beaches...We are blessed. I am so happy when I notice new animals in our yard. I saw a porcupine yesterday!

...a major reason for the move to Scotland is to give the kids, especially Hobbes, more time to ramble, explore, use their bodies. Calvin will probably just sit in a window with a book and look at the greenness, but Hobbes is just itching to go. We have told him that, once he gets his bearings, he will be free to ramble within hearing of the house. Scotland has right-to-roam laws, so you can walk across the other local properties, so long as you don't damage crops/ frighten animals/ go into anyone's garden.
I will be getting the book.
