Lively, for a 5th grader? This is a Dialectic level for TOG, and I am trying to decide whether to buy it to use next year with my ds, who will turn 10 in July. Mostly I am going with Upper Grammar level for him, but there are a few things in Dialectic which I am going to try. Our library system doesn't have this, or I would just borrow it and look it over myself. Any thoughts will be appreciated!

I didn't read it, but my son read it last year as a 5th grader. He enjoyed it very much.

I read it with my 6yo after studying Rome. There are enough references to what will come that you'd want to place it well into the study of Rome so it could be fully appreciated. It was good, but not nearly as good as the two Rosemary Sutcliff books that are part of the same series (Black Ships Before Troy and the Wanderings of Odysseus).

Thank you both! I ordered it, on your recommendations! We do have the Black Ships and Wanderings of Odysseus.

Not only is this book beautifully illustrated and a good abridgement, but IMO is very important as a historical artifact, of how the Romans wanted to see themselves, what they considered important, and why it was composed in the first place. I think my ds will really like it and I wil do as a read aloud for first grader as well.

I'm reviving an old thread (rather than starting a new one, after doing a "search".
We've just finished up the two Rosemary Sutcliff adaptations of the Iliad and Odyssey as our read alouds and the little man wanted to go to Part III. But I didn't think there was a suitable Aeneid for an almost-5 year old. So I was thrilled finding "In Search of a Homeland" by Penelope Lively. This looks perfect!
We start tonight.
