My son and I rescued a very young, very skinny, very pregnant cat Saturday night. I mean, I see strays all the time, but this one just insinuated herself into my consciousness in a way I could not ignore. I brought her home, knowing in my head that it was a really, really stupid thing to do, because we already have the two cats allowed in our lease. I cannot keep her, and I knew that the odds of finding someone to take in a pregnant stray were somewhere between slim and none, but . . .
I went to church on Sunday and made a pest of myself begging people to take the cat. I talked my husband into agreeing to donate money to an organization to cover her care and medical bills for a couple of months. I contacted the one person I know who is personally involved in cat rescue, who e-mailed me back wishing me luck but quoting me the dismal statistics. I made lists of rescue agencies in our area, every one of which has a notice on its website that warns they do not accept strays from "the general public." And I was just waiting until today to call and beg them, anyway. I went to the Petco to buy some additional food and litter and bugged the ladies running the cat adoption event until they took my phone number.
And, as of this morning, it looks like I may have found her a foster home that will take her in. They will foster her and the kittens and try to find adoptive homes for all of them.
I have an appointment to drop her off this afternoon, but it still seems too good to be true. I honestly expected this to be a much bigger ordeal and don't quite trust that it will all work out. She (the cat) is just incredibly sweet and affectionate and really deserves a chance to be somebody's beloved pet. So, I would greatly appreciate any positive thoughts you all could send our way this afternoon.
