Where would I find pictures and info? Is there something like this that I can just purchase or do I need to do it myself? I'd like to do an artist a month and leave the pictures up for the year. Any artist ideas for SOTW 3?

Kathy,

I did something similar last year. I chose one artist a month to study. I found 3 -5 paintings by that artist on the internet, copied them into a word document, and printed them on cardstock. After that I laminated them so they would stay nice for a long time. I also have a bunch of coloring books from Dover that have famous paintings. I copied off one for each artist for the kids to paint. Now we have our own little art gallery in our playroom along with the masterpieces my children painted. We still frequently review who painted or sculpted a particular piece.

I plan on doing this again next year with 12 new artists.

I suppose you could just go to Ambleside Online and use their Artist rotation to find the historical era your after. They provide links to the artwork and info on the artist...I have made prints the background of my computer for a month or two and we just appreciate it that way. ;)

I just have to jump in to say that I love this idea. We just don't have time to really do a formal fine arts study. I work F - S. For music, we have just been listening to various instruments and composers during the day but we just haven't really gotten to art other than some reading about art in history. Thanks for the idea. I will have to stash this one away for next year.

HI Kin,
I've been using old calendars for picture study. About 4 years ago, I found 6 or 7 on sale at the local bookstore (or maybe it was the Dollar Store, I don't remember). Each was 12 prints of an artist's work, along with a page of biography for that artist. We have Degas, Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh and several others. You can see how I've hung them up at my blog--scroll down to see our school room. Now is the perfect time to scout around for calendars on sale. Try the local chain bookstores.

Here's a great website for just that thing. Click on the painting that you want to study and there's a large picture and information about the painting and the artist. You can even print worksheets and copies of the painting to color.

Enjoy!
