My personal opinion only, but I think they should be able to read quite well...at least for starting something formal.

However, if you are learning it yourself, and they're picking it up naturally like a second language, then by all means, start at birth! :) My 2nd grader is doing Lively Latin, he reads excellently and has been for several years. My K'er probably won't start Lively Latin for a long time...he isn't reading at all yet. However, he knows the colors in Latin and can count to 10 also.

No 'experience' here but what we're doing is just learning vocabulary right now with 6 and 4 year olds. They think it's fun. ;)

I am working on teaching them 2-3 words per week....I tend to think that they learned English this way:
Speaking It
Reading It
Writing It
then grammar

So, that said, I think just teaching some vocabulary to very young children can be a nice start if your chompin at the bit, like me! :D

I don't know when is best to begin a formal program, though MP gives guidelines for their stuff. But right now is a wonderful time to chant the forms. They will learn it easily and have fun. You can do vocabulary, too, very easily, but I think they have more fun with the forms! Latin prayers and hymns are also great to work on.
