I have a 10 year age gap between dd#1 and #2. Can anyone offer any tips on
how and when toddlers start sleeping without a diaper?

DD#2 will be 3 in aug. she was using the potty at but I just always put a diaper
on her for bed and naps. i figured since they were wet I needed to keep using them.

About a month ago I decided to see what would happen if she took her daily nap
*(2 hrs around noon) without a diaper. That went well. She does fine, but I have noticed she
doesn't sleep as long when I don't put a diaper on. anyone else notice that?

That 2 hr nap time is really a good time for me to work with the 12 year old, so having it
cut in half is taking a toll.

I think I'm too chicken to let her sleep the entire night without the diaper. I'd love to hear feed back on when others accomplished this.
I just don't remember the details from dd#1

thanks

All of my kids have been different. But basically at 3 yrs old they stopped needing diapers altogether. I never pushed the issue. I noticed ds3's diaper was dry after his naps, so he started wearing underwear all day. Shortly after that, he told me he wanted to wear underwear to bed, and that was the end of diapers. I just made sure he used the bathroom right before bed, and as soon as he woke up.

Stop with the "nigh nights" as my sister calls them when she can wake up dry.

Make sure they go potty before bedtime. My husband and I always got my one son up before we went to bed and had him go potty again. He had bed wetting issues. This really helped us.

we just put my 5 year old BACK in pull-ups, after trying 3 weeks of nights without them.....I guess I'm the wrong one to ask about toddler night training.:001_smile:

We tried cutting liquids in the evening (Which is difficult, when they are out playing until right before bed.) She really WANTED to be dry. She was waking up soaked in the middle of the night and coming in for me to change bedding. Then, she was still waking up wet in the morning. It just wasn't worth all of the laundry and effort and sleepless nights.

We also tried me waking her up to go potty right before I went to bed. She was so hard to wake up, that she often fell into the toilet. That would wake her up, crying. But, it didn't help her stay dry. I think the fact that she sleeps so hard is probably the problem.

The only thing we haven't tried is medication or a bed alarm. I'm just not concerned enough to try those.....yet.

Exact same scenario here! The only accident ds had was when dh forgot to take him potty before bed when I was gone. He hasn't forgotten since!:001_smile:

My 4yo can nap during the day in his underwear without accidents, but he still needs pull-ups at night. Most of the time he wakes up dry, but if we put him in underwear at night, he'll wet the bed for sure.

There are some genetic bed-wetting issues in our family and my 11yo just stopped wetting the bed at night before her last birthday, so I am not rushing my 4yo.

For us, we went without pull-ups at night after a full week of dry pull-ups. Every dry morning, they were allowed to put a special sticker on the calendar. A first, it was only sporadic, then we started seeing more dry days grouped together. I think seeing visually how they were doing helped. Good luck!

that's a good idea. In this case with dd#2 I noticed that if she has a diaper on she will use it. If DH or someone forgets and puts a diaper on her at nap time she WILL soil it then ask for it to be chaged.

I guess i will have to try it and see but without her keeping dry with it one I'm really left in the dark to know when.

She already wakes up at 6:00 (every day!) What if no diaper means 5:00 am? :w00t:

My now 11 yo dd was potty trained as soon as she turned 2, she stopped needing night diapers when she was around 2 1/2.

My 4 y 4 m o dd, however wasn't totally dry during the day (minus accidents) until she was 3 1/2. She is still waking up with a wet diaper, even though she goes potty just before bed, although I must admit I have started to see progress, she is not wetting her diaper as much any more. We will get there!
