I planned on having our dog spayed before she went into heat. Well.....she just started a couple days ago. Can she be spayed while in heat? How long should her heat last?
I know my cat was. It started the day before she was to be spayed and we let the vet know. It wasn't any problem. I'd call and check or ask them when you take her in. I'm not sure how long it lasts. I just know that our cat meowed continuously until we took her in to the vet. I couldn't have handled that much longer.

Dogs that are in heat when spayed tend to loose a bit more blood--the whole procedure is a bit messier...but it can be done!

Yes, it can be done, but is more costly. I ended up waiting to save the $$$.

No vet in my area would do it while my dog was in heat. She is under 10 pounds, though, so that may have made a difference. As the others said, it is due to the increased blood flow to the area making the risk of extra blood loss too great.

Only vets that spay animals for shelters have no regrets in spaying while the animal is in heat. There is a much increased risk of hemorrage when doing it at this time. You are best to wait 3 months after heat to be sure the body is past all reproductive time.
