I've marked the materials that will be new to us.
Language Arts is the area I am least confident in teaching. I spent what many would consider too much time looking at all possible options to find what "connected" with me the most. Yesterday both FLL 3 and IEW's TWSS arrived, both I had narrowed down to my top picks. I spent some time looking at them and even watched the first TWSS dvd. I also thought about why I was drawn to SWR and didn't care for workbook based programs. I came to the conclusion I didn't want the boys to simply memorize lists, I like how SWR makes them think about syllables and listen for each phonogram. Even though it seems time consuming now, we haven't had to use a phonics program and the boys will be done with spelling come middle school.
I also thought and asked the boys about their favorite parts of the day. I looked at my goals for each subject and eliminated using two programs for the same subject (SOTW & Sonlight History, Horizion & Singapore math, etc.). I'm trying to be efficient with my time and theirs. I also looked for mulitpurpose materials to help with that, like FLL which includes copywork, memorization, dictation, and grammar. With that I came up with the following decisions.
And last, I forget who posted this link originally during the discussion of "level 1" readers containing so many site words, but the book list toward the back has been wonderful! Thank you so much for sharing it and for those who may have missed it - includes phonetic books for pre reading through 2nd.
