My dd is just finishing 4th and her Stanford Achievement test scores came today. She did poorly on phonetic analysis of vowels - in fact she missed them all (the report said she did at least attempt to answer the questions)! She had problems with phonetic analysis of vowels and consonants last year - so at least we were able to improve in one area. I had her do "Explode the Code" books 6 and 7 this year in addition to reading aloud and silently. She reads well and has good comprehension. She also spells well. Any ideas?
Thanks!

All About Spelling (http://www.all-about-spelling.com/). This program is very easy to use, and it is based upon the Orton Gillingham Method for Phonemic awareness. In plain English ;), that means that your dc will learn all of the possible sounds a letter or group of letters can represent; for example, the letter o can be pronounced o as in pot, o as in coat, oo as in to, and and u as in ton.

If she is reading and comprehending, that really is the goal here. The tests won't even be analyzing that type of thing much (if any) longer. As far as her problems this year, she may be calling 'em like she hears/says them. That is a real problem for some kids. Of course, that usually shows up in spelling. How is her enunciation? Really listen closely, it can be hard to hear what sounds they are really making when you know what word they are saying.

and my son, who is 8 in '2nd grade', missed half of the Vowel analysis. BUT, he tested at a 5.1 Reading level and 5.3 Spelling. I decided NOT to worry about it, and let it go! I took one of these... :chillpill:
I realize that as a Homeschool mom I am not teaching for a TEST, I am teaching for my kids to learn, but most of all to LOVE to LEARN!!! ;)

We just received our 2nd grade daughter's test results as well...with below average score in phonetic vowel analysis. Actually, her grade score was 2nd grade, so i was a bit confused on how they qualified it as "below average". Wouldn't 1st grade or lower be "below average"?
We were wondering the same thing as far as where to go from here, as her spelling questions were all answered perfectly.
Thanks for you help in solving this predicament that is apparently a non-issue. :D
