Ds 1.5 just got caught nibbling on chapstick. I don't know how much is in him. Should I just make him barf it up?

Call National Poison Control Center (1-800-222-1222) and they can tell you.

This is a free and confidential service. All local poison control centers in the U.S. use this national number. You should call if you have any questions about poisoning or poison prevention. It does NOT need to be an emergency. You can call for any reason, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Thanks! For some reason it just didn't occur to me to call. Anyway, they said some diarrhea (I can never spell that word) might occur. Making him throw up might hurt his throat.

We used to give vaseline to our cats so they wouldn't throw up hairballs.

I think chapstick is basically petroleum jelly, too, and you'd have to ingest a lot of it to have a major problem the vast majority of the time.

Better safe than sorry. I'm glad you called poison control and that your baby is okay.

I could be wrong but I'm thinking it won't be too harmful, maybe just make him more regular, if YKWIM. I ate an entire tube of cherry chapstick as a child... in the store before my mother purchased it no less! LOL (I think I ate it while she was turned around picking up a prescription.) I also ate a large baggy of Tums thinking they were mints at one point too! :o I don't know for sure though... maybe I just got lucky!

I once ate almost half a bag of prunes. If I can survive that, a child can survive a tube of ChapStick!

I went into a panic when my adoring daughter fed her baby brother a whole tube of teething-gel. The National Poisons Unit just said 'He'll just have a bit of a numb mouth'.

You'll have some...*ahem* special diapers to look forward to if our experience holds. My oldest son, now 9, ate a tube of of it at age 2, then two days later took a good handful of Vaseline, then a month or so later his sister's fruity lip gloss/chapsticky stuff. *sigh* So far as we know, he's off the petroleum products, now.
