I have heard that if you get lung cancer....your survival rate is very low.....is that still the case.
Anyone know if you can actually beat it?

One of the ladies who works in the dining hall has had it twice! She did not quit smoking after the first time. Nor did she quit when she was diagnosed with another form of cancer later on. They found lung cancer again last year and removed portions of both lungs. She was back to work remarkably soon after. I would not put money on her having quit smoking this time, though. :(

She's lost a whole lung but has been cancer free for several years.

If they catch it soon, it's a lower level stage, and there's no nodal involvement, then I think it is believed to be "survivable", which I think means the person lives about 10 years out from the surgery. Often in a case like this, there's not even radiation/chem given; or maybe only one and not the other. If the cancer does not return within a year of the surgery, prognosis looks better. Unfortunately for my mil, hers did return within a year and was fatal.

My dad was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer in 2001 - he was told by his doc that 75% of people with this type of cancer do not survive beyond the first year. He went through a year of chemo and radiation with no surgery, and has been cancer free ever since. To me, it was a miracle. No guarantees, of course, but the miracle enable me to get to know him more in that time than in any other time of my life, and I thank God for that.
