I bumped into a GREAT anthology of primary sources for US history (A Documentary HIstory of the United States). The anthology served as a "spine" for short primary sources. I still found and used other sources (web motsly) but I really really valued having the collection as a baseline.

Does anyone know of an equivalent anthology for European history? We will be going from 1450 to the present next year, so any collection that focused on any part of that period would be welcome.

I have only been able to find scholarly tomes that look deadly dull, focus on very obscure aspects of history, and are quite expensive.

Thanks for any help!

Thanks.

I am so hoping that someone can recommend a book. While my kids do read many primary sources via internet, I prefer a hard book for a spine. The old-fashioned girl in me, I guess!

So google books won't qualify?:)

I love google books because I can bookmark things for my daughter, make notes etc. It is so convenient.

I bet you've already seen this. There are two volumes but I'm just linking to the one.

The main author is Marvin Perry. Vol. 2 starts w/the Renaissance I believe. I have an older edition of both volumes (Western Civ covered in 2 volumes to give you an idea of the scope). The selections are short, I believe nothing longer than 3-5 pp.

I noticed it's used in the Hillsdale high school syllabus too if that gives it some cred. :-)

Thank you Holly and Jenn and you others -- the two books recommended look like just what I was thinking of! Hurrah!
