View Full Version : i-pod nano
I am starting my research for one for my 13 year old for Christmas. (no tomatos please) What is your likes, dislikes, preferences (rather have upgraded mp3 or rather have a different model i-pod etc. something else I should consider. He's had his inexpensive mp3 for 2 years so I think he is ready to move up to an ipod.

I don't know why anyone would throw tomatoes. My boys use their iPods for music, yes, but also for flash cards, audio books, Teaching Company lectures, and audio from various curricula. Having said that, get as much memory as you can afford, audio books take up a lot of room. They are great to have.

Dh and I both have one and love them. I have heard from someone who has seen both the ipods and the mp3s that you should go for the ipod for more storage. We got ds a shuffle on his recent 10th birthday. He loves that. I figure when he is older, he can move up to an ipod.

I luuuuuuuv my ipod!!
I have the 80 gig, to give you a point of reference: I have 2,000 songs, all the Harry Potter books, over 100 podcasts (many of them video podcasts) and it's only taking up around 12 gigs of room.

Yes, but she's looking at the Nanos and they don't come in 12 gig.

But they do come in 8 gig. I'm betting a 13 year old won't have much interest in downloading 2,000+ songs and every podcast they have the slightest interest in. My mom has the 8 gig nano and she loves it. She has 1,000 songs and The Bible on hers and still has room. We bought my dad the 80 gig for Father's Day so we were just talking about them on the phone.

My dd has the 8g Nano and loves it. She can hold three movies, a ton of music and even a bk or two all at the same time. I have an older 30g video (holds tons of music, and bks). I think they have been well worth the price.

It's the older generation version, holds around 250 songs. That's plenty for him, and he doesn't care that he can't play the songs in specific order.
He bought the Shuffle with his birthday money, and didn't want to spend too much. We got the Shuffle at Best Buy for $50.

I got a creative zen for my birthday. I just did not like it. It was not nearly as easy to use and an ipod. I asked my 19 year old ds what I should do and he said I needed and ipod. I had heard that www.apple.com (http://www.apple.com) had refurbished ipods, so I checked it out. I saved about $50 on a 4g ipod and it still has a year warranty. I just thought I would throw that out there. BTW, I LOVE IT! :coolgleamA:

music-oriented (will be a music major in college), and he uses it frequently. He has downloaded lots of music, both for please listnening and for studying. He plays piano and guitar and writes music also; has even saved demos of his own music on his iPod nano.

We've bought a couple of refurbished iPod Nano's from the Apple website and have been very pleased with them.
My older ds(16) currently has a 4GB nano and it's a decent size for him. He uses his for mostly music, some games and small selection of photo's. Younger ds(13) will probably get a nano for Christmas and I'll definitely go with the refurbished route again.

And my kids can't wait until dh and I upgrade so they can have my nano.
I have an 8 gig, I think. I love it. It has all the music I have at home and want on it and still have lots of room. I run with it and have the Nike + iPod. It says you have to have Nike shoes but I don't. I found a little pouch for it that attaches to my shoes and it does just fine. This is why my kids won't be getting my nano if I upgrade. But truly I don't see any reason to upgrade.

The only reason I can think of to buy an mp3 other than an ipod is that you want to download something that is not compatible (for me, it was audiobooks from the library, I bought a Zen for around $100). My two dd's have had ipods for years.
We have also had great experiences with Apple service. My dd's 2+ yo 30 gig ipod recently began losing its battery recharge capability. For $60, Apple replaced the entire ipod and even with mailing time had it back to her in one week. The charge was due to its being out of warranty.

I run with it and have the Nike + iPod. It says you have to have Nike shoes but I don't.
Do you mean the features still work without the shoes? It tells time, distance, pace, etc without having the Nike shoes? If that's true, I'm going to have to consider that for hubby.
