Hello! I have a couple of questions revolving around this. We're probably going to be using Sonlight Core 3 next year, and I've heard mixed reviews about their Language arts (both here and on their forums). I didn't know FLL 3 existed and I was trying to decide whether we would continue with Rod and Staff AND Sonlight, or just one or the other  etc. Now, what I'm wondering is could I use FLL3 ONLY with my DD in 3rd grade? In other words, would this be all I needed for LA, or would I still need to purchase Sonlight's LA 3 Instructor's guide to round it out? Also, for those of you who've used Rod and Staff, would you recommend switching or just staying with Rod and Staff?
Thanks!

If r&s is working for you, I would suggest staying with it. It is a very nice program. I have used both and I think it depends on the child which one you would choose. I am currently using fll3 with my 4th grade son and I don't use a separate writing program. However, I do think you would need an additional writing program. I am planning on buying the swb writing program when it is available in June.

Lenora,
What's SWB? Rod and Staff Reading was not working for us, and right now we're only using English. I guess I should have clarified that in my first post :) So, are you using both FLL3 and a writing program? I wonder if Sonlight and FLL3 would be a good fit? HMMMM:cool:
Thanks for the feedback!

My FLL 3 and IEW TWSS arrived today I am really excited about this combo. I use Sonlight History, read alouds, and readers. We really enjoyed FLL 1, FLL 2 got a little slow and repetitive for us, so I was hesitant to try FLL 3, but I like what I see. FLL 3 will cover dictation, copywork, memorywork and grammar. IEW gives me the structure to teach writing, yet flexibility to have ds write about topics we are studying and use materials we have.
We tried R&S 2 after taking a break from FLL 2 and didn't like how old fashion it was. Even doing it orally, ds didn't care for it.

We just started Core 2 LA and it is okay so far. I am considering FLL 3 because I found FLL 1 and 2 so thorough.

That is good to hear, I really like the looks of both side by side.

LG,
I hear from some people that Core 3's LA is too advanced, but from others I hear it's not "enough." I'm leaning toward purchasing it because they have the 6 month return policy, and really, it's only about $35 for the IG so why not:D. We haven't used Sonlight since K (when it was actually K and not A,B,C), so we have never used their LA program, but from what I understand the 3 LA is the first time the readers really coinside with the history. I'm really looking forward to that, which is why I'll probably buy the LAIG. I'm just having a hard time deciding what I need to supplement it. I really like the looks of FLL3 so I think I'll probably go with that.
Blessings!

As to what the SWB writing program I think it was in reference to the Complete Writer series by Susan Wise Bauer. The first book is coming out in June, and the title is "Writing With Ease:Strong Fundamentals." It's the first in a series of books on writing and how to teach it. It will be coming out with level 1 and 2 workbooks to start with.

I meant the Complete Writer series by Susan Wise Bauer. I would like to use it for my fourth grader, who is not doing any writing yet. For my 6th grader I am using Writing Strands. I may switch to iew or r&s for my 6th grader for next year.
