I'm looking for something for ds to start working through. I'd like it to be something he can largely do on his own. He'll be 12yo in the fall, starting sixth grade.
I'm considering God and the History of Art, because I like integrating art history into it. Any opinions on that, or recommendations of something else I should consider?
Thanks,

Well, since nobody else has answered, I'll tell you about what we use, though I am certainly no art expert!
My 11yo ds is using Artistic Pursuits, and he really enjoys it. Each lesson focuses on one element of drawing (line, texture, value, color, etc.) Then there are 3 or 4 assignments for the lesson. The assignments give a lot of leeway as far as what is actually being drawn. It may ask the child to assemble a group of 3 objects of his choice to draw, paying special attention to the element being discussed.
Each lesson also has an art appreciation component, with information and a reproduction of 1 artist's work, with a special focus on how the element being studied is incorporated into the artist's work. So, there's a little bit of art history, but it's not a major focus. I think the grade 4-6 program mentions mostly American artists.

I will be using God and the History of Art with my 12 yo ds in the fall. We haven't of course started it yet but I have looked through it and it looks good. It does include art history and comes with cards with famous paintings on them and it also includes paint and marker cards.

We are using the free art history resources found here: www.gardenofpraise.com/art (http://www.gardenofpraise.com/art).htm

I am leaning toward using God and the History of Art. I may also have him write a short report on one of the featured artists each month, to combine art and writing.
Artistic Pursuits also looks good, though. I can't make up my mind!:confused1:
