We have lived in Germany for 3 years almost and just found out we will be staying for another 3 at least. :D I want to learn the language and help my soon to be 5th grader to learn it. Our wonderful German neighbors spoke english and helped me tons, but what if my new neighbors aren't so nice??? I want to be able to communicate better than just a few words. Do I go with Power-Glide or Rosetta Stone...or is there something better? Any advice is welcome!

Since your goal is conversation I think either of these should do the trick, by what they say. I haven't tried them though. Any chance you have libraries there that might have something you could try out before buying?

Our library is sad here....so once I pick one, I'll have to just suck it up and use it. KWIM ;)

We use Rosetta Stone for Spanish and I love it. I have heard nothing but good things about it. I only know one person who has used Powerglide, and they weren't happy with it. If that helps at all....

You could check homeschoolreviews.com They might have some helpful opinions there.

we used The Learnables--3 or 4 levels. We also had a private German tutor come to our home twice a week. He also spoke English. I wonder if this could be an option for you?
I do not know how much it would cost. The company my husband works for paid for our classes.

If it's in the KMC area (Kaiserslautern), there are a lot of German classes for the Americans in the area. Unfortunately, I'm not at home and I can't remember the name of the program my teacher used. However it was a German developed program used to teach all immigrants. You bought the basic set in German and then bought the workbooks and translations in the language of your choice, ie English.
