Our natural bend meshes so well with LLC so we are going to use it as an overall 'guide'. I am schooling boys, ages 6 and 4, please critique my curricula/plan.

Daily Core:
Prima Latina
Singapore Maths
Music Appreciation
Recitation
?? Language Lessons for Little Ones (includes art apprecitation)
Explode the Code along with Easy Readers

((100 Easy Lessons for DS4))

Weekly Studies:
English Studies - The Blue Fairy Book by Lang
Christian Studies - The Bible In My Heart (Rod & Staff)
Modern Studies - Paddle to The Sea by Holling
Classical Studies - Aesops Fables ill. by Milo Winter
Nature Studies - The Burgess Bird Book

Does that look about right? :)
Also, for future reference would you place Parables from Nature (Gatty) under English Studies or Nature Studies?

It seems like a lot of 'core' but I suppose once they are reading well and phonics drops out it will look better....

Thanks!

Looks good. I wonder if there's maybe more planned reading and handwriting in the daily category than need be?

Handwriting work is part of ETC and copywork.
Reading is in the Bible readers and ETC and Easy Readers.

Personally, I would aim to alternate days for those things. My kiddo could only do so much reading practice and handwriting work in each day, and alternate days is still plenty, in my opinion.

I don't know Parables from Nature, sorry.

Ooh, tell us about Song School Latin!

Barbara....the Bible readers are actually read alouds that we read TO the boys. ;) I'll take that out of our core, since it is really just 'extra' as a family Bible time.

So that leaves the small reading in ETC and the daily easy reader, which are Bob book types...we *really* do need these right now.

Handwriting...I see your point! LLFLO does not have daily' copywork, I don't think...I am waiting for it to arrive and I'll better evaluate upon going through it.

Thanks!! :D

I think it looks good - it always seems like more when you type it out, but things at that level never take as long as I think (thank goodness!) I would consider the Parables as English Studies if you really have to classify it - but if you needed to call it science (if you are needing to report some science for records purposes) I think that is fine too.

Thank you, thank you!

I think I'd just go ahead with putting Parables under English (next year). Too many good books....too little time! :D

I looks good. We will be doing some of these exact things with 5yo ds next year. I do know that a revised LCC is due out by late spring or summer with a different breakdown. I guess a lot of people did not like the multi stream history. If you like what you have, stick with it. If it is important to you to follow the LCC suggestions more closely, you might want to wait and see. At our house we do world history, Christian studies, literature, science, and fine arts as our once a week subjects.

Hi Wendy,

Yes, I heard that a new revision of LLC was coming out! You can be sure I'll get it. lol

We will go ahead for the rest of this school year with what I have listed, and then depending on the new revision we'll see about the plan for this fall. (2nd grade)

I am curious to what the change will be...I don't mind the 2 streams of history at all, it reminds me of Ambleside in a way...

I think we are sort of planning to keep 2 streams as we move forward in the 4yr world history cycle. This year we are in ancients so world history and classical studies have a lot in common. In future years, I think I will maintain some sort of classical studies. The boys are absolutely loving D'Aulaire's Greek Myths and Famous Men of Rome this year.

I would like to do the D'Aulaire's Myths in the future, but I am also planning to use some books from Yesterdays Classics. The Iliad for Boys and Girls by Alfred Church (http://www.yesterdaysclassics.com/previews/church_iliad_preview.pdf) looks great! ;)

The Iliad for Boys and Girls by Alfred Church does look great, but you may find it a difficult book for such young boys. You may want to check out Black Ships Before Troy by Rosemary Sutcliffe. It also covers the Iliad, but is geared more toward younger children and has fantastic illustrations. My children really enjoyed this when they were younger.

** Black Ships Before Troy by Rosemary Sutcliffe **

Oh hey, thanks for the recommendation! I'll look for that one. ;)

The Iliad for Boys and Girls I was thinking more for my DS6 who would actually be 7.5 when we started....but Black Ships may be great for NOW. :)
