In the popcorn thread a while back, someone mentioned that whirly-pop is extra good when you use coconut oil. I just looked in my local grocery store and I couldn't find it. Is it a health food store thing?

Now that it's cooler, I'm DYING for more whirly-pop! :lurk5:

You can find it in the health food aisle of your grocery store or you can find it at health food stores.

Okay, on top of wanting Phish Food and Cake Batter, now I want a Whirly Pop.

Not good influences. Plus, let me get this straight, this machine is one that goes on stove. It looks like kind we used in seventies. Is it easy to clean and what about good air popper. Now I have to buy popcorn and micro. is bad. In a quandry. Oh yeah, I have to make room for ice cream habit.

I am at target weight now and am going to do PE with dd next wk. But by end of summer I think I will tip the scales.

The healthiest reasonably brand is Nutiva

it's available at our local Walmart Supercenter and Whole Foods.
or at www.vitacost.com (http://www.vitacost.com)

Beware buying any of the cheap brands, it's chemically processed, tastes metallic and isn't good for you......

If you aren't using it for health benefits, then any brand will be fine.
Good luck~

It is insanely expensive at health food stores ($16 per pound last year--it could be double now for all I know, the way things have been going). Our SuperWalmart has sells a refined kind (still no trans fats, but it doesn't smell like coconut--which is usually a good thing) for much less. It's next to the shortening.

It's at our grocery store, in the organic section. I think I paid $6.95 for a 16 oz jar.

We do use it to make a lot of popcorn on the stove, but I've not bothered with special equipment. All you really need is a pan with a lid.

Anyway, the more you buy the cheaper. I buy 5 gallons at a time from here:

I buy organic, exrta virgin, cold pressed, as it's the healthiest.

Thanks for the replies!

I noticed a lot of you recommended SuperWalmart as a source.
A) We dont' have a SuperWalmart
B) I don't shop in Walmart, Super, Maxi, Mini, or anything in between.

Newbie, Yes, it's the old-fashioned, hand-crank, stovetop popcorn maker. My mom got me one for my birthday last SEptember and I ADORE it. Seriously....if the house caught on fire, I'd grab the whirlypop on my way out the door.

I buy mine from http://mountainroseherbs.com (http://mountainroseherbs.com/)
They have a great oil at a great price. Be sure to get the one that is for food and not only for cosmetics.

I just saw some at the grocery store last night, near the ethnic foods.

Good luck!
