View Full Version : Friendship Breads.....are these any good?

A friend gave me two bags of starter last week and they are ready to whip up into bread now. But they stink like something strongly alcoholic and I'm wondering how safe it is to eat something that's been sitting out for weeks. I know, I know....they did it for centuries way-back-when. But they got their food poisoning, got accustomed to it, and their stomachs were all the tougher for it. I'm not accustomed and I'm not in the mood to toughen up my stomach - at least not this week. :)
Is this stuff okay?

Mmm... Someone gave us friendship bread once and it was super delicious! Yeast is going to start smelling funky as it does what it's supposed to do. I'd say use it and enjoy! It's supposed to have a strong smell as that is a result of the fermentation. :^) HTH

I used to make Amish Friendship bread all the time. We LOVED it. I wish I knew what I did with my recipe. Also, when I was in college, I used to make sourdough bread every week.
Make your bread, ignore the smell, and enjoy!

Chocolate pudding with chocolate (or other flavored) chips
Vanilla pudding with cinnamon
Banana pudding
Butterscotch pudding
My problem is that no one I know ever wants to take starter from me and it just keeps multiplying. I don't remember how many loaves I'd baked and starters I had stored away before I found out that you can freeze the stuff and use it later instead of continuing to divide and feed and grow it.

mmm good! It is some of the best bread I've ever tasted. The options are even better than the plain recipe. Consider keeping one batch for yourself.
