View Full Version : Is there much Christian content in TOG for grammar stage?

I'm desperately trying to find more meaningful and more amount of Christian content in our history studies! Dd is advanced and so ready for this, and asking for it. I do plan TQ next yr, but I don't think it will be enough Christian commentary for us! Is TOG just reading and activities at the grammar stage-no biblical tie-ins? (I'm looking specifically at year 2 2nd two units and yr 3 right now.) Thanks!

For TOG Yr 2 it would include Church History even for grammar level. It doesn't have Bible included because that is covered in year one. The teachers notes are from a christian world view.

Yes, TOG does include Christian content. Especially in the Upper Grammar Level. Many of the books that are scheduled include a good amount of christain content, such as Mr. Pipes, Thunderstorm in the Church, The Queen's Smuggler, and many others. These have sparked many interesting conversations around here. But even the Lower grammar stage includes christian content. For example, my lower grammar son just read the Boy Who Held Back the Sea. The teachers notes told me to talk about the importance of a good reputation by reading psalm 22:1. You will not have this every week, but many weeks will include some sort of christian worldview to discuss. But, you will actually have to read the teachers notes to find these discussion topics.

The Lit sheets will also have the child think through some of this. Not for every book, but for the books where it is an issue. Like Clamity Jane in year 3 asks...well let me look it up...

This is for UG:

What did she do that made her a legend?
Why do you think she did what she did?
Do you believe she really did this? Why or Why not?
Do you believe she honored God with these actions? Why or why not?

Later when Buddha Stories or The Broken Tusk are read for Literature UG does:

What is the truth you can learn from this story?
What was wrong with this story, from a Christian viewpoint?

The first I like because it encourages the child to look at the person in the context of their word, but then does move towards holding them up to the light. Again the second does respectfully look for the good, but again also holds it up to the light.

In the student sheets they also have commentary that is similar to Truthquest for the child to read. The teacher notes will go way beyond what your child is ready to learn, but it will feed your curiosity and prepare you for the next time around when he is ready for more.

And I had just talked myself out of it-I'm so afraid I'll get overwhelmed! Hi, Heather (waving)-thanks for the detailed response. Do they have this type of thing regularly, or sporadically? And KerriF and BaseballMom, thank you too! (BTW, bballmom-LOVE your tagline quote about prayer-it has blessed me this wk and I've thought of it often!)

Hi!

At the LG level the sheets are more basic, and don't ask those type of questions, but there have only been a few books at the LG level that I would pass on due to content. Buddha Stories is one of them, but I do plan on using it as a reader for my oldest with the worksheet on the UG level.

I just looked through the sheets for the first 9 weeks of year 3 at the UG level, and two of them were asking character questions like that. Old Yeller, and Calmaity Jane. The rest varied, some where who, what, when, where and why sheets, some had summarization, one had the child write down the events in separate boxes then cut them out and have siblings and teacher try to put them in order. I get the feeling they are approaching it from different ways on purpose to keep the child engaged.

Guess I would say that when it counts they do approach it that way. The books I have read from those first 9 weeks haven't had a lot of content. Island of the Blue Dolphin, Benjamin West and His Cat.., they just didn't need those type of questions because they didn't have content issues.

I really need to pray about this decision. I'll probably have to back-burner it for awhile since dh just got an unexpected job offer yesterday which would involve a move. We have to concentrate on figuring that all out right now!

Sounds like the wise choice. It will still be here later, ya know.
