Carson's Basic History of the US

Has anyone actually used this course (all 6 volumes = >1000 pages)? I love Carson's approach, but have a hard time seeing my son actually read it all. I notice that Hewitt has a Syllabus and Texts manual for the series...has anyone used it and found it helpful?

My son worked through all six texts, using the teacher's guide to help direct his studying. We added lots of primary source documents, and he had a wonderful US history course!

My dd found the texts very dry. My ds LOVES economics and really enjoyed Carson's approach.
