Hi Everyone,

I looked at samples of Megawords on the EPS site, but it was difficult to tell which book would be best for my dd. She is 13yo in 7th gr. She is a decent speller, but still needs a lot of practice. Can anyone advise me as to which book would be best?

Thanks! :)

EPS suggests that all children regardless of grade start at book 1. They aren't by grade, rather by skills addressed and they build on each other. I am looking at this, too for my spelling challenged guys.

You'll move through the first 2 books quickly, so you'll want to get both for going through one school year. Starting with Book 1 also gives both you and your student a chance to get familiar with the Megawords system while the vowel patterns and syllabication patterns are still fairly easy. Book 2 gets a little harder, and Book 3 is definitely harder.

Megawords has been a *huge* help in improving our struggling student's spelling. Hope it will work well for you, too! Warmly, Lori D.

I'm thinking of getting this also for my 12 year old. Are they necessary?

You can sometimes find them cheap from a reseller/used.

I bought my last Megawords from an Amazon reseller.

Good luck

It's worth the price to go ahead and get the TM, as:

1. It has info on using the program as a stand-alone spelling program.

2. It has all the answers to speed up your grading time.

3. -- MOST importantly! -- It has the list to those occasional exercises which say: "Your teacher will now dictate a series of syllables..." Unless you want to do like I did my first year out with Megawords and have to spend 20 minutes searching through the full-page long word list at the beginning of the unit to figure out which words were going to match up with the syllables in that exercise... it's worth getting the TM! (lol)

Warmest regards, Lori D.

I would start at book 1 and you'll find that with older student, you'll speed through the first two books. I started ds 11 with book 1 and it was very good review of phonics for him. He sped through the 1st bk and is now on the 2nd.

We have an almost 13 year old and he started in book 1 and is now working through book 2. Like the other posters mentioned, book 1 will be the best starting point as you don't want to miss anything important and it really does lay the foundation in book one!

We love this and wish we had started it sooner. It is sooooo much more than spelling. It's spelling, reading, and vocabulary!!!

Hope this helps some...not that at this point you need it!;)
