My ds11 is now more than halfway through this book, and is already eager to read the sequel. It is the longest book he's ever read (almost 500 pages).

We are doing our own private "summer reading program". I made up a list of about 30 books I want him to read (pulled from Veritas catalog, other literature lists, and asking for recommendations here). He may choose any 12 of these to read by the end of August. There are prizes along the way and at the end. (He has been reading a lot of easy stuff this year, except assigned reading for school. I wanted to get him into some more challenging, but still fun, books.) The Mysterious Benedict Society is the first book on the list he has been reading, and he loves it!

Thanks!

Hear, hear. My 11yo son is loving it too. And my 8yo. Me too! I'm reading it aloud before bed and whenever we do read alouds. A thumping good read.

Yay! All of my kids (and I) really enjoyed it, too (well, except for the 3 year old...).

Ooooooh, I want to do that too. I never thought of a private "summer reading program". hmmmm.... At least I could pick out the prize that would really get him reading. :001_smile:

And there is a sequel out now, which my kids are reading, called Mysterious Benedict Society, The Perilous Journey.

But my well-read 12yo dd says that the Mysterious Benedict Society is merely a re-take of a much better novel, called "Story Time" by Edward Bloor...

Here's my son's list:

*Treasure Island
*The Mysterious Benedict Society
*Redwall
*Peter and the Starcatchers
Guns of Thunder
Carry On, Mr. Bowditch
Swiss Family Robinson
Anne of Green Gables
*Basher Five-Two
The Call of the Wild
White Fang
*The Jungle Book
The Yearling
*Kidnapped
The Shakespeare Stealer
William Wilberforce
Calico Captive
Where the Red Fern Grows
*The Princess and Curdie
*Adventures of Tom Sawyer
*Adventures of Huckleberry Finn
The Phantom Tollbooth
Hans Brinker or the Silver Skates
Island of the Blue Dolphins
Around the World in Eighty Days
*The Chronicles of Narnia (any one)
The Enchanted Castle
Oliver Twist
*The Hobbit
The View from Saturday

The *s indicate the books he chose to read; he can change his mind if he wants. The prizes are: after 3 books, a Star Wars action figure; after 6 books, a $5 Starbucks card; after 9 books, a $5 QT card; and after 12 books, a $25 card for Target or Borders. Ds is saving up for a Nintendo DS, so he will probably use the $$ for a game.
