We ended up just writing a check for the 3000. It would have been nice to pay less but I am just glad it is over. I am such a wimp! I can't stand to think someone might be mad at me.

Yes you made the right decision to walk away. Your sanity and your time are worth it. I had to make that decision too--it made me sick to think they were getting away with their rotten behavior and poor product, but I do not regret walking away for MY sake. GOOD FOR YOU.
