Spanish curriculum for bilingual kids

Hi everybody,

Wondering if anyone has resources for curriculum in Spanish that would be consistent with the curriculum recommended in A Well Trained Mind? We're not looking for Spanish foreign language programs. Our family already speaks Spanish. Looking more for Kindergarten level reading and writing programs written in Spanish designed for Spanish speaking children. Also, we love the Bob Books and would love to find similar early readers in Spanish.

For those with older children we just found a fantastic series of books that are used in schools in Argentina. www.estrada.com.ar. Tons of classical stories complete with comprehension and writing exercises. We bought "The Adventures of Tom Saywer," "Stories from the Trojan War," "Travels of Marco Polo," and my personal favorite "Myths and Legends from Argentina." There are about 70 titles in the collection. Reading through some of the stories and activities I would guess that these are appropriate for the middle school years. These are all in Spanish and contain no English translation. There are Spanish footnotes to help define a number of the more obscure words but it's definitely academic Spanish.

Unfortunately, I have found no place that carries curriculum in Spanish. I did get some when I visited Ecuador a few months ago, but I have no other source. I have looked in the past but not found anything. However I am always looking!!! If you find more, please share.

Santillana USA sells Spanish curriculum- http://www.santillanausa.com. I use the math, haven't used the language arts yet. Scholastic Book Clubs has phonics readers that I have bought and used. Other curriculum companies that sell curriculum in Spanish are Rod & Staff, A.C.E., and Abekka, although it looks like Abeka doesn't sell it in the USA. You can get a free subscription to a magazine called El Hogar Educador. There are ads of different Spanish curriculum providers in there, too.

There's nothing WTM-style in Mexico that I've been able to find, at least for elementary. Nearly every school here uses books provided by the Comision Nacional de Libros de Texto Gratuitos (CONALITEG), though some of the private schools use other stuff. My son is currently going through the 1st grade Lectura book from CONALITEG (borrowed from a neighbor, since my son is not enrolled in school!)

I've never seen the book, but Don Potter's been using La Pata Pita with his Spanish students, he likes it, I think it was developed for beginning Spanish students to read. He says it teaches by syllables.

This is what I used to teach my daughter to read (I taught her in Spanish first). LPPV is the second in this two-book series. The problem is, it is very hard to find, possibly OOP (even Amazon shows out of stock). There was a very promising lead, a company that carried the reader, workbook, and $2 teacher manual, but they no longer exist. Glad I picked them up when I did.

A (native, Spanish-speaking) woman in our yahoo group checked out Rod & Staff's program and said it looked solid. It is not a translation of their English program, but developed by their Spanish counterpart company. I'm currently using their 3rd grade reading program.

Another promising native program available here in the US is one developed by Alma Flor Ada. You can find it here http://www.delsolbooks.com.

We also used the Rod and Staff Learn to read program in Spanish. We currently are still using it for our daughter. My son has went through all of there stuff and has passed there level. But they work with a company out of Costa Rica that provides lenguaje for all grades. They also have science ect. If you are in the US you can purchase many things from this company. The first 3 years of we used rod and staff lectura and now have used for the last two years the stuff from this company. It is all very solid material. We also have the Pita Pata books and Rod and Staff Lectura Nival A and B is far more superior in my opinion. I say this just because as previously stated I do not have the whole program for Pita Pata just the two books, no work books ect. We have used these two books as extra reading practice and because the format is the same it was easy to trasition from one book to the other.
