I have Saxon 6/5 & 7/6 and want to use them this fall with my ds. He is finishing up BJ Math 5 and did pretty well, although I wouldn't say he whizzed through. He would be considered a 5th grader in the fall.
Right now I'm leaning toward 6/5 so I don't move him ahead too fast but I'm not sure how the two would relate. My oldest struggled with Saxon at 7/6 level which is why we switched to BJ this last year. However, I have all the books and Dive CD's, so I want to go back and use the resources I have.

I would take the placement test on Saxon's website to determine the best book for him to begin:)

Saxon's recommendation always if your coming from a different curriculum is to take their placement tests . This will put him in the proper grade level .

6/5 is probably going to be too easy for him after having done BJU 5th. But do use the tests - that is the bestest way to figure it out!
6/5 is for an "average 6th grader, or an advanced 5th grader", but overall i think most people use the 2nd number for the grade.

Thanks. Just looking through the 6/5 book, it looks alot like what he did last year. I'm going to let him take the test to make sure.

The approaches of BJU & Saxon are SO very different. Have you used BJU all along, or did you try it for a short time and decide it wasn't working? (Sorry for being nosey!) I was just wondering why you were switching to Saxon.

I actually used Saxon first with older two ds's. However, after a grueling year with oldest and 7/6, it just didn't seem he was getting enough practice. I decided to go with BJU because it has a chapter by chapter approach. For the older two, I am using Jacobs Algebra next year.
Since I decided to switch him, I decided to do them all one year and I found most of the books used. My other dc's don't seem to struggle with Saxon much and I already own 5/4, 6/5, 7/6 & 1/2 with the Dive CD's. Although I like BJU, since mine aren't really struggling I want to use the resources I already have.
Up until 5/4 with my three older, I used MCP and was very pleased. My dd did BJU Math 3 with the workbook last year because I didn't like Saxon before 5/4 level at all. However, math is my favorite subject so I don't mind mixing it around a bit.
