I smelled smoke coming out of the vent in the dining room today so I shut of the AC. Turned it back on a few hours later and confirmed that there is a smokey smell. Anything I can check before the expensive AC guy can get here Friday or (AAAHHHH!!!) Monday?

Ya, do you have pets? Could be hair in the filter. Was there smoke where your blower motor is in the house? Try a window fan.

You could try to hang or rig a wet sheet in front of a large window at night. During the day, you can hang wet dish towels in front of a fan. As air passes through the fabric, it is cooled and will help the room you are in.

Of course, close windows and window coverings to shade your interior. Grill or plug in the crock pot outdoors. Better - eat out and then visit a play place for indoor play, shakes and ice cream.
