Generally, how much time per day do you spend doing one-on-one teaching?

I know this is going to vary based on the child's age and course content, but I would really like some round-about figures please :)

Some background info: My ds 9 is an only child, and this next year will be our first year of homeschooling (he'd be a rising 5th grader). We're doing TOG Year 1, LRTEG, some science stuff I'm throwing together, VCR, Mindbenders, MUS Epsilon (and probably Zeta, with some Singapore word problems). I'd really like to have one day a week (probably Friday) that is an "easy" day with hands-on projects, Mindbenders, and just generally catch-up if we get behind during the week. He's a fairly independent worker right now ;) (with his homework and projects at school),but I dunno if this will change when we start homeschooling. Also, I work at home, and while it is fairly flexible, I kind of want to have an idea of how much of my day is going to be spent teaching so I can loosely schedule the day.

Anyone have a similar situation?

We just finished our 4th year of homeschooling. My son will also be in 5th this fall. We work together 3-4 hours a day, depending upon how many tangents we explore. My ds is not very independent. He can do a lot of the work on his own, but he likes me beside him. I assign some of the independent work as "homework", using that term loosely.

He's a very auditory learner so talking through some subjects is helpful for him.

My son is an auditory learner also. I was figuring about like you said, 3-4 hours a day, but I'm thinking that with all of the independent reading in TOG, that might cut down on some of our class time. We'll have some read-alouds, but mostly he'll have to be on his own for that.

My DS will be 12 this week, but due to ADHD and LD's, he is not very independent. I generally need to help him through most subjects. But we still finish our day in 3-4 hours.

We are finishing up our 3rd year of homeschooling.

This year in third grade, I started writing ds's independent assignments on his student planner that include: memory work, spelling, handwriting practice, reading, and piano. Since he is an early riser, I found this system working very well for us. He usually finishes all his daily work listed above before I am ready to teach in the morning.

My one-on-one time with him usually covers daily Bible reading, read-aloud, math instruction, foreign language instruction, science/history reading, discussion on various things, and weekly writing composition instruction. It takes about 2-3 hours a day to do the above.

I am happy with the arrangement this year and plan to continue next year.

Thanks for all the responses so far! You are pretty much confirming what I had kind of planned for, about 2-4 hours a day. It is great to hear from others who have already BTDT!

Since I work, I don't have 4 hours a day 4 days a week. I try to do work 6 days a week, year round, with only a couple of weeks off for trips or illness. I do science on the weekends in a plop, with some science reading in with other bedtime reading. Once, stuck in an airport, I took all the times in the WTM, added up the yearly amount each subject, each stage, and then divided it into 50 weeks, and divided that into 4 week nights and double that time for Sat. Sun each. It has given me a vague guide and hope, too.
Keep us posted.

I have one ds8, rising to 3rd. We school about 3 or 4 hours a day. My son is also not a very independent working child.. I really have to monitor his progress or some days would stretch into 8 or 9 hours. As long as I remind him to stay on task, he's ok. He is getting better, but I do look with longing at other hs moms who talk about getting chores done after they assign the days work!
