I read it as an 8th grader & I didn't "get it". I gave it to ER (12th grade) to read this past summer. He read maybe 1/4 of it and then lost interest. I didn't press him to finish it. One afternoon a few months ago, I came across the movie (1990) while channel surfing and recorded it. It's mostly like the book, but there are minor differences. I plan for ER & I to watch it together and discuss the themes. You can find a BUNCH of study guides and lesson plans, etc. here: http://www.aresearchguide.com/lord.html#movies

There are so many references to this book, as well as others like 1984 and Brave New World, that I consider it a must-read.

I just stumbled on this site. It looks really great. It gets into the symbolism of each major character, in addition to the shape of the island. There are pictures. It looks really good.

I think he was 11 or 12, and he loved it. We read it out loud together. I'm not a big user of studyguides, but I think Sparknotes has free downloads on tons of literature.

I remember reading this book in 8th grade and the teacher was good enough to time it with the release of the movie! Now that I just dated myself...
Anyways, dd did it this year (7th) and it was fun. We used such a variety of material, from lots of places, but the best site I found was http://www.glc.k12.ga.us/BuilderV03/LPTools/LPShared/lpdisplay.asp?Session_Stamp=&LPID=31493
because it links to a bunch of other sites. Probably even the other ones I have!

I tried to use this book as a study in symbolism, but we really seemed to focus on groupthink and personal responsibility for most of our discussions. Especially since this book followed Fahrenheit 451. Really, its such a popular book that it has been evaluated from every conceivable angle.
HTH!
