I want to make one for my dd's b-day. I found some directions online that seem pretty straight forward. Just wondering if there are any tips that I should consider from those who've done it.

I made one once for my sister in law and it turned out fabulous. It is one of the easiest cakes to make and decorate. Have fun!

I made one, but I decorated it as a mermaid. I used a glass bowl to bake it. It was hard to get the center done without burning the edges, so you have to keep a very close eye on it.

It's only around $10 and it will be easier than baking it in a glass bowl. In fact, it comes with a little doll top to stick in the cake and ideas and instructions for the Barbie cake as well as other ways to use the same pan. The Wonder Mold pan has a metal core in the center that helps it cook evenly without the edges burning. It's a very easy cake to make and you can decorate the dress many different ways to fit your dd's tastes.

I've used a metal mixing bowl before--but I had the most success using the Wilton pan made specifically for doll cakes--it comes with a heating core that helps it to bake evenly.

Hints:

DO NOT put candles on this cake--make a separate mini-cake or cupcake to hold the candles...one year the doll went up in flames when DH ignored me when I told him NOT to put candles on the cake (dress part)...It was "Happy Birthday to you, Happy--PUT OUT THE FIRE"...Luckily I used a doll pick instead of my dd's favorite Barbie! The cake was saved--but the pick's arms were burned off!

Bake the cake at a lower temperature...like 325-330. It will take longer to bake and by the time the center is done the sides may be dried out/burnt.

Decorate the cake from the bottom up.

I did.

I made a cake-and-a-half recipe. This filled two ordinary round pans and one oven-safe bowl. I stacked them with frosting between layers. I forget how I got the barbie in, but I think I used an apple corer to make a tunnel for her???

There is no need for any special cake--just make what you like best

I used a generic doll from the craft store because I did not want to ruin our barbies.

Unless you are proficient with frosting, you will want to use one generic frosting tip, maybe two. I used a large tip that makes stars/flowers and just filled in a million little blobs in various colors. I used a smaller tip that was the same shape to pipe frosting onto her bodice.

It was a big hit.

If you assemble the cake on a platter or cake plate you can use your frosting and tips to make flowers or decorative blobs:p along the cake platter. Just use enough frosting to support the candles.

The last time I made a doll cake was for a lit project:
Tale of Two Cities.

I made Marie Antoinette. We quartered her. Let them eat cake!:D
