Has anyone here used this program and/or would you be willing to offer opinions on how effective it might be with a challenged speller? The tutor feels dd is ready for book 1 and that the material would match up well with the kinds of information she gets during her tutoring sessions. It's much more than *just* a spelling program, and very different from Sequential Spelling, which is what we've used for some time.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I have been using Megawords with my DS this year. And we love it! We have worked thru book one and halfway thru book two this year. I love how it teaches patterns and not to memorize a list. My son has improved in spelling quite a bit since using this prorgram.

Doran,

Book 1 of Megawords focuses on teaching the syllable types and probably would line up very well with what she is being taught in Wilson. I think you'll find it easy to use at home. Just be sure to get the TM to go with it!

I've done Orton-Gillingham based stuff with my own kids and found Megawords to be very helpful!

I switched my 13 yo struggling speller from Sequential Spelling to Megawords this year. She prefers Megawords, and I think it's working better than SS for her.

This is a very good program, in our opinion. We've tried about 4 different programs and we are going to stick w/ this one.

I was reading another site's thread about Megawords and noted that several people commented on "figuring out how to use it" as if it wasn't as straightforward as I imagine. And here, the recommendation to get the TM. What is it about Megawords that might be confusing?

I'm one of those people who don't buy a teacher's manual unless it is absolutely 100% necessary. So I don't have one for our Megawords. There are some parts in the student book where the teacher is to dicate some words for them to write. I'm assuming you could find those words in the TM, but I've always thought of them myself(just making sure they fit the lesson). When its test time, the student book works the same way. It says something like "your teacher will dicate 10 words for your test". Again, I just use words I know were in the master list.

IMO- it works just fine this way. My son is thriving with the program!

Doran,

You'll need the TM mainly for dictating words, but you'll also find it helpful for answers, especially for things like syllabication and accent. The TM's are just under $8.00 each. I found several that I needed on Paperback Swap a few months ago and that is practically free!

HTH!
