Has anyone used this in addition to other books for your high schooler?

I'm using SWB's new Ancient History book with my 9th grade dd. What would you like to know?

Just if it was interesting and understandable for a 9th grader.

I think this book is well suited for a 9th grader. As for the interesting factor, well, it is interesting to me. My 9th grade dd isn't a big ancient history fan so she is having a little trouble with the interesting factor. I guess it depends on the student. I think SWB does a great job in "telling" history, but my dd does get a bit lost with names and dates. Yesterday, I sat down and read a chapter to her. I think she was more interested in the chapter since I was able to liven up the reading a bit. It was quite interesting to me since it was the story about King Minos and the legend about the bull/man which lived under Knossos in the Labyrinth. There is also interesting information how the volcanic eruption at Theras and how ash and a tsumani may have affected the island of Crete and the Minoan civilization. Quite a read!
I do wish the book had some sort of study guide to go with it. I'm struggling to know how to evaluate my dd's knowledge she is gaining from the book. I am trying to teach her summarizing skills, so hopefully summarizing the chapters will be helpful.

Thanks Jan!
I think I'll buy it and let him use it as his spine. Do you think it's appropriate as a spine?

...my 9th grader has read chapters that I thought would be helpful. I haven't had him read the whole book though - his plate is so full right now. It would be a good idea to read it cover-to-cover though sometime. I'm sure he will before he exits.
I know that I enjoyed it. But please know that it is written for an adult audience. It's fine, really - but she does tell the whole truth sometimes. :o
It wasn't a problem for my ds, but I did appreciate knowing where the issues where so that we could discuss them.
I would suggest that you read the book before you hand it to him - which isn't a painful thing - it really is worth it! :)
Peace,
Janice

I think it is appropriate for a spine. You could dip in and out of it according to your dc's interest.
