OK, so I read this article (http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24861341/), and while it doesn't induce me to run to the store, it did make me think about changes in one's buying and one's diet.

We have been making far more from scratch and mostly all whole grains purchased from the bulk section of various stores. We are doing a garden though I cannot say we will be harvesting much if the state of our plants is any indication at the moment! We are eating less meat though we are not yet to spam. :tongue_smilie: What changes are you making in your homes?

Oh MY! At $2.62 for 12 oz, that's supposed to be a bargain?:001_huh: If I watch sales I can get meat MUCH cheaper than that. That's $3.49/lb!!!!!! That's CRAZY!!!

I got caught up in that Spam bit!

The changes we've made... We have a HUGE garden going and I've been using my hawk-eyes on the sales flyer. I have not yet upped our grocery budget, although I believe I will need to do that in the very near future. Whereas, I used to have a little left at the end of the month and I could really stock up when meat goes on sale, I'm not able to do that as much and we have nothing left at the end of our 2 week period. I've been mixing up dried milk if we need it for something, I'm just trying to make do. The dried milk is not cheaper in my area, but it is handier for me.

I'd go vegan before I ate a can of Spam. :ack2:

No Spam for me, but as one who tries to minimize trips to the grocery, I do appreciate having a pantry with non-perishables including canned or pouched tuna, clams, anchovies, etc.

What I am doing differently these days is learning how to cook some of the vegetables that have shown up in my CSA box. While I am familiar with most of them, there have been some items I don't usually buy like turnips. We have tried them roasted and grilled, but I remain ambivalent to the turnip. Tonight we had chard sauted with garlic, ginger, soy and sesame oil, a recipe that I created years ago when I began subscribing to a CSA and found myself with a bundle of swiss chard.

Some of the other things that I have been doing in the kitchen are more of a reaction to my son's bottomless pit appetite. Last night, for example, I made a massive side dish of brown rice flavored with Rotel tomatoes, onion, corn, cumin, etc. I figured that if he needed a more substantial supper he could fill up on this.

DingDingDing!!! That's exactly what I said to dh. I can buy sustainably produced, farm fresh chickens from my Mennonite farmer for $2/lb. His ground beef is $3.49/lb and it's grass fed, pastured organic beef.
I realize that everyone doesn't have access to that kind of thing, but still...you can buy plenty of conventionally raised meat for a lot less than $3.49/lb!!!!:iagree:

A long, long time ago there was this country variety show with guest entertainers, and the entertainers would share their favorite recipe. The one time my dh and I watched it, the guest entertainer (can't remember his name... Graham something... sort of a Billy Ray Cyrus type - you know, had only one or two hits) shared his recipe for "Cheesy Spam Bake." Seriously!! My dh and I laughed so hard we were hurting. To this day, we can't think of the word spam without thinking about that recipe being demonstrated, step by step, oh so seriously, on national tv. LOL

I used to eat Spam sandwiches as a kid. HAven't eaten it since :).

I have to wonder, though, how many people are buying it as part of an emergency stockpile. When we are threatened with major hurricanes, canned meats (yes, Spam!) fly off the shelves. Non perishable fully cooked foods are second in importance behind water. It never fails. When hurricanes threaten, there goes the pork and beans, spaghetti-o's, tuna and spam. I still have a can of corned beef from Hurricane Rita that not only do I fail to phathom why I purchased in the first place, but I can not bring myself to throw away either :).

So I can't help but think that people are buying it not to eat now, but to start building up a supply of food in case of disaster or food shortage or energy failure (there does seem to be a lot of concern about that right now).

This needs to be watched on a semi-annual basis. "I don't like spam!!" That is such a splendid line! :tongue_smilie:
