"But What About Socialization?" (http://www.newoxfordreview.org/note.jsp?did=0106-notes-socialization)

Yesterday's piece about the Chicago public school teachers' union concern about home schooling promoted us to rerun the piece below which first appeared in the New Oxford Review. (http://www.newoxfordreview.org/note.jsp?did=0106-notes-socialization)

This is a cute little piece on homeschooling and socialization. This piece came from the New Oxford Review

Apparently, the problem with homeschooling is the socialization of children. In the Kolbe Little Home Journal (Fall 2005), there is a brief item called "Homeschooling Family Finds Ways to Adapt to a Public
School 'Socialization' Program." Here it is:

"When my wife and I mention we are strongly considering homeschooling our children, we are without fail asked, 'But what about socialization?' Fortunately, we found a way our kids can receive the same socialization that government schools provide. On Mondays and Wednesdays, I will personally corner my son in the bathroom, give him a wedgie and take his lunch money. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, my wife will make sure to tease our children for not being in the 'in' crowd, taking special care to poke fun at any physical abnormalities. Fridays will be 'Fad and Peer Pressure Day.' We will all compete to see who has the coolest toys, the most expensive clothes, and the loudest, fastest, and most dangerous car. Every day, my wife and I will adhere to a routine of cursing and swearing in the hall and mentioning our weekend
exploits with alcohol and immorality.... And we have asked them to report us to the authorities in the event we mention faith, religion, or try to bring up morals and values."

LOL! Thanks for this, as I was just thinking about it. My son just insisted on going back to school this past year, so we chose what is considered one of the best private high schools in our town. It is about half the size of the big, public high schools - and does have about half the problems, too, but the kids still can't just walk through the halls for the five minutes it takes to change classes without some pushing, pulling, striking, or otherwise ganging up on others and fighting.

Fighting is single individuals or in "clique gangs", like the baseball team against the swimmers, because they don't "like" swimmers, etc., etc. Does this make ANY sense whatsoever? And teachers will NOT come out of their classrooms and monitor any of this, which would probably stop it cold....My son is 6'3" and not a docile person, so he doesn't get bothered too much, in general, but the day there's a problem I am going to rock their world.....

I drove by the school just a couple of weeks ago in the mid-morning on my way to take my younger son to a 4-H happening and was scared out of my mind. There were about 8 police cars lined up in front of the door, lining the entrance way, blocking the exit by the cafeteria. I called the school with shaking hands and was told it was a mandatory lock-down to check for drugs. Oh. My. God. I thought there had been a school shooting or something.

My son does hear a lot about weekend parties with alcohol and drugs. But (should I say thankfully?), he knows someone well whose older brother is completely immersed in drugs and he's seen what a horror that is for the entire family. I think (hope) it has made such an impression that he will never go down that road.

We do have to rebuke him constantly over his language, as he's gotten into such bad habits from the language used at his (Catholic) school....

In looking back over the year that we've almost made it through (he has three days of testing left), I am trying not to cringe and cry over the thought of two more years left to go....

LOL! That was great!!!

This weekend at a homeschool convention, I just bought my daughter a shirt that says "Warning, Unsocialized Homeschooler." LOL!
