Subway has a contest for kids that excludes homeschoolers. At the
bottom of the page you will see this paragraph:
"Contest is open only to legal US residents, over the age of 18 with
children in either elementary, private or parochial schools that
serve grades PreK-6.
No home schools will be accepted."
The person who sent me this said that she wrote her own story saying she would go elsewhere.

I just "submitted an entry" stating my disappointment for the exclusion. We love Subway and probably won't boycott, but...seems like a strange exclusion. Maybe it's because the grand prize is equipment for a school.

Subway has responded to several people I know that have written to express disappointment or inquire about the rules. The responses have been very gracious, with info about their other contests and an explanation of why homeschoolers weren't eligible for this one. ($5000 of athletic equipment for an institutional school was first prize.)
Someone posted their response from Subway here on the boards, too.
I think the better course for them would have been to state that the first prize, if won by an independently schooled child, would have to be awarded to a "real";) school, and with the responses they're getting, I bet they'll rethink it in the future.

Gotta love the wording "real school".
Question: I've only seen responses from Scholastic. I wrote Subway and haven't heard back. Would anyone be willing to share the responses they received from Subway?

Gotta love the wording "real school".
Well, it was a joke, hence the ;) after. I was just too lazy to type out a big ol' long word like t-r-a-d-i-t-i-o-n-a-l.
ETA: I'm going to check my yahoo lists to see if those responses were from Scholastic or Subway.

Although I'd love to say we could easily USE that much in sports equipment!!! LOL!!!

And I find people get all funny when you say "B & M schools." :D

LOL! I must really be out of it to not be catching things like that (we worked our tails off in the yard and garden yesterday).

Now my opinion is that I went into home educating with the idea that my children probably would not be allowed to participate in events like this. So, it doesn't make me mad or anything. I know my children get more advantages than ps kids so why not let them have little contests like this?! JMO

That's it! I'm never eating at Subway again!! (Does it matter that I already never do?) ;) I can't feign to be truly upset about this... I would never have known if not for these posts since we never eat at Subway and I never buy Scholastic materials. I think it's rather silly that they couldn't have come up with an alternative way to deal with the possibility of one of the 1,000,000 home educated children out there winning their contest. But I do think they are within their rights. I just can't force myself to get worked up about it... I'm just not feelin' it.

We won't be boycotting as I believe every business has a right to structure their contests in the way they see fit, much like college scholarships are designated to whatever quirks the donor deems important to him (ie: left handed only; B students form XYZ school, etc).

My issue goes much deeper...I don't like that you can't pick what you want on your sub, you get what they tell you you can get. I don't like for anyone to be the boss of me.:D
Seriously though, I wouldn't boycott even if it bothered me. They are plenty of other things availbale to homeschoolers.:001_smile:

Too funny Paula!
I'm not really upset about it, especially considering the prize. What if a single hs family won all that! How gimme can you get?
And I can't be too mad at Subway when they feed my hardworking hubby who takes his lunch break there while I'm at home doing the homeschool thing. In a way, Subway's helping us homeschool!

Well, so? I've bolded the type in the rules that pretty much excludes public school kids too.
Somewhere some people need to check their spelling and phrasing. Elsewhere some people need to chill out.

I feel a bit proud that they have elected to exclude homeschoolers. There are enough of us successfully homeschooling that we are recognized nationally.
Either that or they are just scared that a homeschooler would win.

This thread tells me my instincts are so totally right on. :grouphug:

I don't eat at Subway, but I wouldn't boycott if I did.
I believe Subway restaurants are franchised, and I wouldn't care to do damage to a small business owner over rules that are beyond his control.

 This contest doesn't seem all that well thought out! I couldn't care less that they're excluding homeschoolers but dang, I hate stupid mistakes!

I just can't seem to work up righteous indignation about this. There are other contests and this was to be a blessing to a large group of students, not really the kind of prize a hs'er would need.
