For second grade, would you recommend starting at the beginning with Year 1, or skip ahead to Year 2? If you were to start with Year 1, would you later do a combination year (maybe in 7th & 8th) in order to follow the final 4-yr. rotation in high school?

Also, do you feel that there are enough writing exercises with TOG for second grade, or do some of you supplement? :bigear: Thanks!

You can start where ever you like:001_smile:. They will go back through the rotation in middle school then in High school so, all 4 years will eventually be completed.
There is tons of stuff for a 2nd grader (Lower Grammar), you will need to pick and choose it's an awfully meaty curricula.

We use IEW so I am not sure about Writing Aids.

If you are using Writing Aids with TOG, then yes it's plenty for 2nd grade in the writing department.

If you are not using Writing Aids and you're only reading and doing the literature worksheet, you may want to supplement.

We're using Primary Language Lessons, doing book reports, writing narrations and that's plenty of writing.

I agree with Jessica.

Thank you, this does answer my writing question.

In regards to beginning TOG (for my dd going into 2nd grade), I'm a little confused by TOG's website as to what would be a good starting point. If we decide to go with TOG, we would be folding my ds in when he is in 1st and dd is in 4th. I'm trying to determine the best scenario. Am I making any sense??:tongue_smilie:

I unserstand the "folding"part. My solution was to do TOG1 in 1st/4th, and then we'll be stretching TOG 2 for 2 years. I have seen TOG Yr 2 and wow- it's very full. Then we'll be on a more correct rotation for the olders. I will most likely do Yr. 2 in one year when we return to it. Those are just plans, though, and you know the way of plans!!

Child {AGE} {LEVEL}, Child {AGE}{LEVEL}

Child 7 LG, Child 3- TOG2
Child 8 LG, Child 4- TOG 3
Child 9 UG, Child 5- TOG 4

Child 10 UG, Child 6 LG- TOG 1
Child 11 UG, Child 7 LG- TOG 2
Child 12 UG or D, Child 8 LG- TOG 3
Child 13 D, Child 9 UG- TOG 4

Child 14 R, Child 10 UG- TOG 1
Child 15 R, Child 11 UG- TOG 2
Child 16 R, Child 12 D - TOG 3
Child 17 R, Child 13 D- TOG 4

Child 14 R only - TOG 1
Child 15 R only - TOG 2
Child 16 R only- TOG 3
Child 17 R only - TOG4

I'd say that's perfect if you start TOG2 this coming year and keep it within a year study. In the lower years skip or combine, stretch whatever topics you want and do a quick overview of stuff you want to skip. By the way, this is my kids line up too, we're just a year ahead of you.

Jessica, thank you again! You are a tremendous blessing! Yes, I needed to visualize it...my brain just wasn't clicking in that dept. I will be looking at TOG more thoroughly at our convention, but I wholeheartedly feel that God is leading me in this direction. I keep reading that it will probably be too much for our first year out, but I really love that it has such depth, whether we choose to do some or all of it. I also really want to find something that we can stick with for the long haul.

Sorry to ramble on....I'm just excited about this curriculum. :hurray:

That's a great layout, jessica! I am going to do this for myself also... jsut to make sure we come out where I want in the end. Thanks!

I see that now. :) Our kids our almost in sync. So, if we go with TOG, I will probably be coming to you for lots of advice! :D

Here's another thing I did, because we buy the books when I was considering TOG I wanted to see what the complete picture would be.

Buy all LG books for all year plans
Buy UG books for TOG 1-3
Buy D books for TOG 3 and 4
Buy R books for all years

I collect titles as I find them cheap but only up through UG at this point. By cheap I mean through Goodwill and library sales and BookMooch (http://www.bookmooch.com)- $1-$3 a book and I'm picky about condition.

Another great suggestion! I was thinking about this today, actually...and whether it would be very expensive to do it. And in the end, I would have a great collection of books. Another thing I love about TOG is the opportunity to read along at the R level as we're going through it...educating mom too!
