Reader’s Handbook: A Student Guide for Reading and Learning (from Great Source publishers of the Writer’s INC. books)

From RR: "Great Source’s Reader’s Handbooks are similar in depth, breadth, and all-around completeness to Writer’s Inc., Write Source 2000, and the others in the writing series, but instead of picking apart the writing process, these tackle reading… in all its entirety. In short, they attempt to do for reading what their excellent writing handbooks have done for English. Each hefty reference handbook consists of twelve chapters which encompass the actual reading process, reading know-how, how to read textbooks, reading various types of writing (non-fiction, fiction, poetry, drama, internet writing, etc.), interpreting graphic information, reading for tests, building vocabulary, and more."

This is the version for 6th through 8th graders. It has lots of meat; over 700 pages. Paperback in excellent condition. RR sells this for $24.75; asking $16.00ppd (within the continental US only). NOW $14.00ppd.

Write Source 2000 (1995 edition)

From Rainbow Resource: "The Write Source 2000 Handbook puts all the writing terms, definitions, constructs, tables, rules, etc., at your fingertips! This is a reference tool for both you and your children. Need to explain the parts of a plot? Here it is, complete with diagram, model story, and checklist for your short story. This book is invaluable!

If you’re using a more “flexible” approach in your English program, this handy little volume will be a real time saver! Even if you’re using a basic textbook approach, it is very useful to have all grammar, punctuation, terms, definitions, etc. in one reference. What does it contain? It’s hard to describe, but here’s a sampling: a six-year calendar; ruler; thinking & listening skills; parts of speech; parts of sentences; types of sentences; writing mechanics (punctuation & spelling rules); abbreviations; a list of commonly misspelled words; guidelines for writing; writing with style; researching; writing a composition; how to write reports, poetry, short stories, letters, book reviews; answering essay test questions; using the library; study skills (including the SQ3R method); dictionary skills; expanding your vocabulary (via affixes); taking notes intelligently; writing and delivering speeches; many tables, maps and useful lists (solar system, atlas, mathematical tables and definitions, weights and measures, computer terms; the U.S. Constitution) - AND MORE!"
