Our daughter loves to play chess but we are not always available to play and I would also like her to be able to move beyond our capabilities. I have read good things about Fritz Chess 9 but I can't find anything without using a computer with it.
Many Thanks,
Lorna

Try US Chess online.
They have a number of products I think.

If you own a Ninetendo DS they have recently released ChessMaster in DS format (http://www.gamespot.com/ds/puzzle/chessmaster/index.html). It should prove usefull for most players. My son has the computer version and loves it. The DS also has a game called Club Games which has a chess option and the ability to challenge other DS gamers. My duaghter uses that one.

My Chess player uses this product from Amazon (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000K4XILO?smid=A3HCES4QKW0BY7&tag=nextag-toys-mp-20&linkCode=asn). We have had it for several years and it has taken alot of abuse. It still works and the younger one has recently picked it up. Now this one (http://www.nextag.com/hand-held-chess-game/search-html) would take you far. I may have to look into this myself as we are ready to upgrade.

In case he is looking to improve his game overall, I will recommend a website; Internet Chess Club (http://www.chessclub.com/) for online play. You can turn off the ability to receive messages while playing so if strangers contacting your son is a concern that would take care of it. We have been using it for a few weeks and are enjoying it immensely. If you go that route PM me and I can give you my son's id so they can play.

use Internet Chess Club. It is a more difficult one to understand though. Their chess instructor had to show me what to do.

Anyway, online for a small, monthly fee she could do lessons on http://chessmagnetschool.com
My kids enjoyed this one, until they were asked to change to the other one. Of course, on this one I don't think that it is games as much as lessons on how to get better.

Other than that, I cannot give enough kudos to chessmaster! That program rocks!
